Staghorn Crab – Paguritta sp.

The Staghorn Crab (Paguritta sp.) is a fascinating little symbiotic crab, often associated with corals of the genus Acropora (staghorn corals). Unlike classic hermit crabs, it does not change shells: it lives directly inside the coral branches, where it finds protection and food.

This marine crab is prized in reef aquariums for its unique behavior and beneficial role in the tank's ecosystem. It helps keep the coral clean by removing debris and particles that accumulate between the branches, while also benefiting from leftover food and the mucus produced by the coral.
