Selection Guide by Experience Level

Beginners (First Reef)

Start with: Zoanthids, Mushrooms, GSP, Xenia, Montipora Digitata, Duncan, Candy Cane, Goniopora (new, robust strains). These corals tolerate variations in parameters and moderate lighting.

Intermediate (Established Reef)

Add: Euphyllia (Hammer, Torch, Frogspawn), Acanthastrea, Blastomussa, Favia, Chalice, Montipora Capricornis. Require more stable parameters and medium-high lighting.

Advanced (SPS Reef)

Master: Acropora, various SPS, Trachyphyllia ultra, Scolymia premium. Require perfect parameters (Ca 420-450, Alk 8-9 dKH, Mg 1350-1400), intense lighting, strong water flow.

Recommended Water Parameters

LPS & Soft Corals: Temperature 24-26°C, Salinity 1.025-1.026, Calcium 400-450 ppm, Alkalinity 8-11 dKH, Magnesium 1250-1350 ppm, Nitrates 5-10 ppm, Phosphates 0.03-0.10 ppm. SPS: Stricter parameters, Calcium 420-450 ppm, Alkalinity 8-9 dKH, Magnesium 1350-1400 ppm, Nitrates <5 ppm, Phosphates <0.05 ppm, absolute stability required.

Coral Lighting

Low (50-100 PAR): Mushrooms, Ricordea, some deep-water LPS corals. Medium (100-200 PAR): Zoanthids, Euphyllia, Goniopora, Favia, Blastomussa, Montipora. High (200-400+ PAR): Acropora, SPS corals, Chalice Ultra corals, some Trachyphyllia. Use a PAR meter for optimal placement.

Placement in the Aquarium

Bottom (weak current): Brain corals, Trachyphyllia, Scolymia, Cynarina. Mid-level (moderate current): Euphyllia, Goniopora, Favia, Blastomussa, Acanthastrea. Top (strong current): Acropora, SPS corals, Montipora plating. Maintain spacing to avoid chemical warfare between corals.

Coral Feeding

LPS: Feed 2-3 times per week with mysis shrimp, cyclops, or coral food (Reef-Roids, Coral Frenzy). SPS: Fine food (amino acids, phytoplankton), daily dosage. Soft Corals: Primarily photosynthetic, occasional supplements. Goniopora/Alveopora: Daily feeding is essential for long-term health.
