Aquaforest Air Scrubber Media 2L — CO2 Scrubber Media for Reef Aquarium

Aquaforest Air Scrubber Media is a filter media designed to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air drawn in by your marine aquarium's protein skimmer. Daily fluctuations in ambient CO2, caused by breathing, pets, and cooking, directly affect your aquarium's pH. The higher the CO2 concentration drawn in by the skimmer, the more pronounced the acidification of the water, leading to a drop in pH, unstable dKH, and a significant slowdown in coral calcification.

Operation and Efficiency

The media comes in the form of dry, white granules that fill the AF Air Scrubber filter chamber while allowing air to circulate. According to manufacturer tests, Air Scrubber Media can increase pH by 0.2 to 0.4 points and stabilize it within the 8.0 to 8.4 range. The granules gradually change color as they absorb CO2: when they turn purple, the media is saturated and needs to be replaced. Aquaforest recommends replacing the media before the color change is complete.

Recommended Use

  • One 2L pack corresponds to a full refill of the AF Air Scrubber reactor
  • Designed for use with the dedicated Aquaforest AF Air Scrubber reactor for maximum efficiency
  • Can be combined with activated carbon in the reactor to purify air from toxins
  • Single use: the media cannot be regenerated or reused
  • If used media remains in the reactor for too long, it may change color again without being effective

Precautions

  • Wear gloves when replacing the media
  • Handle in a well-ventilated area
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct light
  • Product for aquarium use only — keep out of reach of children

When to use Air Scrubber Media?

Autumn and winter are the most critical periods for pH. Closed windows and reduced ventilation increase indoor CO2 concentration. At night, pH naturally drops as photosynthesis ceases and oxygen demand increases. Air Scrubber Media intervenes by filtering CO2 from the air before it enters the skimmer, ensuring a stable pH between 8.1 and 8.4 — the ideal range for coral development.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should Aquaforest Air Scrubber media be replaced?

Replacement depends on the CO2 concentration in your environment. Monitor the color indicator: replace the media when the granules start to turn purple, before the color change is complete. A pH that starts to drop again is also a signal for replacement.

Does Air Scrubber Media work without the AF Air Scrubber reactor?

Aquaforest recommends using the media with the dedicated AF Air Scrubber reactor for optimal efficiency. The reactor ensures an upward airflow through the granules, maximizing CO2 absorption before the air reaches the skimmer.

Can CO2 scrubber media be used with activated carbon?

Yes, Aquaforest confirms that activated carbon can be added to the AF Air Scrubber reactor in combination with the media to purify the air from toxins in addition to absorbing CO2.
