Aquaforest Air Scrubber Media 2 L — CO2 absorber media refill for reef pH
The Air Scrubber Media 2 L is the CO₂ absorber media refill for the AF Air Scrubber. Aquaforest recipe tuned to capture carbon dioxide in the air drawn by the skimmer before it dissolves into tank water and drops pH. The 2 L cartridge covers several months of operation on a standard reef tank — exact autonomy depends on ambient CO₂ concentration and skimmer air draw.
Without absorber media, the AF Air Scrubber has no effect — the cartridge does the chemical CO₂ capture. Replacement is therefore the essential maintenance operation on the Air Scrubber system.
How the media works
- Chemical CO₂ capture — the media reacts with atmospheric CO₂ to fix and immobilize it.
- Clean air output — the skimmer draws practically CO₂-free air.
- pH stabilizer effect — less dissolved CO₂ in the tank = more stable, higher pH.
- Gradual saturation — the media is consumed, its capture capacity drops over time.
Use and replacement
- Loading: open the AF Air Scrubber, pull out the saturated old cartridge, insert the fresh 2 L cartridge.
- Moistening: verify the base sponges stay soaked in RO/DI water to maximize efficacy.
- Saturation signs: pH starts dropping again despite the scrubber running.
- Typical frequency: 2-3 months based on ambient CO₂ and skimmer draw.
- Disposal: saturated media goes with standard household waste.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a 2 L cartridge last?
Aquaforest reports 2-3 months typically, but real duration depends on three factors: room CO₂ concentration (busy living room vs poorly ventilated basement), skimmer air draw, and base-sponge moistening freshness. A pH controller lets you anticipate the renewal moment precisely.
Can I regenerate a saturated cartridge?
No — the media is chemically consumed by the CO₂ reaction. It cannot be regenerated like GFO or biopellets. A saturated cartridge must be replaced with a fresh one to restore efficacy.
Does the media have shelf life before use?
Sealed in original packaging, the cartridge stores for several years. Once opened and installed in the scrubber, the reaction with ambient air starts — even when service is paused, the cartridge slowly saturates. Avoid leaving an opened cartridge on a shelf for months.
