Size

Boyd's Chemi-Pure has been the classic of chemical filtration for decades: a ready-to-use sealed pouch combining activated carbon and ion-exchange resins to keep water clear and parameters steady, in freshwater and reef tanks alike. Every size is rated by the manufacturer: 5 oz (142 g) for tanks up to 25 gal (95 L), 10 oz (283 g) up to 50 gal (189 L), and the 40 oz Grande (1.13 kg) up to 200 gal (757 L).

Fincasters — the channel Boyd links from its own site — shows the whole routine in about a minute.

What it does

  • Grabs dissolved organics and the impurities that tint water yellow
  • Helps stabilize pH and stretch the time between water changes
  • Sealed ready-to-use pouch — don't open it, Boyd calibrates the carbon-resin blend
  • One charge lasts up to 4 months depending on your tank's organic load

Worth knowing: regular Chemi-Pure does not remove phosphates — that's the Elite's job within the family, or a dedicated media like Seachem PhosGuard running alongside it.

How to use it

Rinse the pouch briefly, then set it in a good-flow area of your sump, canister or hang-on-back filter — or run it in a reactor like the Aquaforest AF110. During a Chemiclean treatment, Boyd asks you to pull the Chemi-Pure out and put in a fresh one once treatment is done.

Grande or 6-pack — not the same use

The 40 oz Grande is one big bag: it needs a compartment that can take it, and it gets swapped all at once. The 6-pack is six individual pouches: you rotate them one at a time or spread them across several tanks. Per ounce, the 10 oz × 6 bulk is the best price in the line ($1.30/oz versus $1.37/oz for the Grande) — but the right pick starts with how your filtration is built.

Our advice

The regular is a carbon hybrid with resins. It's a good product, and it comes practically clean already. You rinse it a little and you use it.

Across all three lines we carry everything from the small sizes up to the bulks to save you money. So buy a bulk if you want to save some dollars. That's ReefSolution's offer to you.

Frequently asked questions

Chemi-Pure, Elite or Blue — which one should I pick?

The regular is the carbon + resin base. The Elite adds a phosphate remover (GFO). The Blue is the top of the family, with its extruded carbon that polishes water even further.

Does regular Chemi-Pure remove phosphates?

No — that's exactly what the Elite adds to the formula with its ferric oxide. For phosphate control alongside the regular, add a dedicated media.

How long does a pouch last?

Up to 4 months depending on your tank's organic load. Watch your parameters to fine-tune the schedule.

Grande 40 oz or the 6-pack?

The Grande is one big bag swapped all at once; the bulk is six pouches you rotate one at a time. The bulk wins on price per ounce, but pick based on your filtration first.
