Labroides dimidiatus
The cleaner wrasse is a fascinating and intelligent fish, famous for its symbiotic behavior in which it rids other fish of parasites and dead tissue. While it makes a very interesting addition to observe, it is considered a fish for experienced aquarists due to its specific dietary needs.
Key features
- Difficulty level: Advanced.
- Adult size: Up to 10 cm.
- Temperament: Peaceful with other fish, except for members of its own species.
- Minimum volume: 200 to 400 liters. A larger aquarium is preferable, especially if there are many potential host fish.
Aquarium conditions
- Temperature: 24-28 °C.
- Salinity: 1.020–1.025.
- pH: 8.1–8.4.
- Setting: A well-arranged aquarium with plenty of live rock for hiding places. The cleaner wrasse needs a lot of space to swim actively.
- Lid: Essential, as it's an excellent jumper.
Food
- Type: Carnivore, specializing in ectoparasites and dead tissue.
- Diet: This is the biggest challenge in its care. It must be fed several times a day with a variety of meaty foods enriched with vitamins. It cannot survive solely on parasites from other fish.
- Recommended foods: Small enriched frozen foods (mysis, artemia), fish eggs and high-quality dry foods.
Compatibility and behavior
- In reef aquariums: Generally considered safe for corals, it does not harm invertebrates.
- Compatibility: Can be kept as a pair in a very large aquarium. It is peaceful with other species, but it is important that the fish accept its cleaning behavior. It is not recommended to keep it with predatory fish that might mistake it for prey.
- Behavior: It often establishes a "cleaning station" where other fish come to be rid of parasites.
