The Cynarina, also known as Watermelon Coral or Donut Coral, is a remarkable LPS (Large Polyp Stony) coral prized for its inflated polyps and captivating colors. This solitary coral, often in shades of red, pink, green, or cream, is a true gem for reef aquariums. Ideal for intermediate aquarists, it requires stable conditions and careful attention to its environment.

Care Guide:

1. Tank Size and Setup:

• Minimum volume: 50 liters (13 gallons) to maintain parameter stability.

• Lighting: Low to moderate (recommended PAR: 40–100 PAR). Soft LED lighting is preferred to prevent bleaching.

• Placement:

• Lower areas of the tank, away from direct light.

• Provide at least 4 inches (10 cm) of space to avoid aggressive interactions with other corals.

2. Water Parameters:

• Temperature: 75–79°F (24–26°C).

• Salinity: 1.024–1.026 (specific gravity).

• pH: 7.8–8.4.

• Calcium: 400–450 ppm.

• Alkalinity (KH): 8–12 dKH.

• Magnesium: 1250–1450 ppm.

• Nitrates: Below 10 ppm (ideally 2–5 ppm).

• Phosphates: Below 0.05 ppm.

3. Flow:

• Low. Excessive flow can damage its soft tissues or prevent its polyps from fully inflating.

4. Feeding:

• While primarily photosynthetic, Cynarina benefits from supplemental feeding:

• Enriched brine shrimp, frozen mysis shrimp, or small pieces of seafood.

• Frequency: 1–2 times per week, preferably at night when its polyps are open.

5. Compatibility and Tank Mates:

• Reef-safe: Yes, but sensitive to aggressive corals.

• Ideal companions: Peaceful fish like gobies, clownfish, or dwarf angelfish.

• Avoid: Aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at its delicate tissues.

6. Maintenance and Growth:

• Gently clean the polyps to prevent debris buildup.

• Perform biweekly water changes (10–15%).

• Slow but steady growth under optimal conditions.

7. Signs of Health:

• Fully inflated polyps with vibrant coloration.

• No white patches or signs of tissue retraction.

8. Special Precautions:

• Avoid handling Cynarina’s soft tissues, as this may lead to infections.

• Maintain stable water parameters, as this coral is sensitive to sudden changes.

• Keep it away from aggressive corals to avoid chemical warfare.
