The Fighting Conch ( Strombus spp.) is one of the most efficient and popular sandy substrate cleaners in reef aquariums. Its large, robust shell with a flared lip and large, expressive stalked eyes make it an easily recognizable inhabitant. Its name "Fighting Conch" comes from its defensive behavior of using its sharp operculum like a spear when threatened—behavior that is harmless to other normal reef inhabitants.

His role in the baccalaureate

Exceptional bottom cleaner — consumes filamentous algae on the substrate, detritus, organic matter, cyanobacteria film on the sand, and microorganisms. Its continuous tilling of the surface sand is one of the most effective mixing mechanisms available, preventing anoxic zones and maintaining a healthy substrate.
