Freshwater first — and the manufacturer says so plainly

Hikari intends blood worms for most freshwater environments and limited marine environments. It names eels, livebearers, American cichlids, discus and selected aquatic reptiles.

In other words: this is not a staple for a reef tank. It earns its place as occasional variety, but if you want a prey item that feeds your marine fish and your corals, brine shrimp or mysis will serve you better.

How to feed it

The manufacturer is specific: feed no more than your fish will consume within 30 to 45 seconds, and no more than twice daily. Remove anything left uneaten once the feeding period ends — leftovers turn into a water quality problem.

Hikari adds a warning few manufacturers write down: live or frozen food can spoil a fish to the point where it refuses its formulated diet. Feed it for variety, not as a replacement for complete nutrition.

Manufacturer warning: handling frozen food derived from a live animal can cause the same allergic reaction as handling the live animal itself. Wash your hands thoroughly immediately after use, and before any contact with your nose or mouth.
