Format

Brine shrimp is the treat almost every fish accepts without hesitation. Hikari harvests its own live, at their nutritional peak, before freezing: the manufacturer presents it as a natural source of fatty acids and natural algaes.

In this clip filmed at the store, we show how to turn an ordinary frozen food into something that feeds the fish and the rest of the tank.

What Hikari packs into every cube

  • Fatty acids and fibre beneficial to most freshwater and marine fish
  • Gut-loading with bio-encapsulated multi-vitamins before freezing
  • Three-step sterilization: free of harmful parasites, unwanted bacteria and foul odour
  • Rapid freezing that holds the original colour, taste and texture
  • Whole animals rather than broken pieces
  • No-touch cubes so you can portion without getting your hands wet

Four pack sizes

3.5 oz (100 g) cube pack, 32 cubes — Hikari item #32320

The entry size. One cube per feeding, nothing to break off, nothing to weigh.

8 oz (227 g) flat pack — Hikari item #32427

A first step into bulk without committing to a large quantity.

16 oz (454 g) flat pack — Hikari item #32440

The size for well-stocked tanks and daily feeding.

32 oz (907 g) flat pack — Hikari item #32464

The largest size Hikari publishes for brine shrimp: for a fish room, several tanks, or a breeder. Break off the portion you need and the rest goes back in the freezer.

Worth noting: brine shrimp moisture (max. 92%) runs lower than Bio-Pure mysis (max. 96.5%), and its fat runs higher — min. 0.5% against min. 0.3%.

How to feed it

Hikari says to feed no more than your fish will consume within 30 to 45 seconds, no more than twice daily. Remove anything left once the feeding period ends. The manufacturer aims it at both freshwater and marine environments.

Manufacturer warning: handling frozen food derived from a live animal can cause the same allergic reaction as handling the live animal itself. Wash your hands thoroughly immediately after use and before any contact with your nose, eyes or mouth. Always avoid contact with open wounds.

Our advice

Do fish really need frozen food? Not always — good quality pellets can be enough. But I do recommend it: fish love it, it creates real interaction at feeding time, and the small bits that break loose go on to feed the benthic fauna, the corals and the whole system. It is more complete. I also recommend varying the menu: it is not good for them to always eat the same thing.

"Brine shrimp isn't nutritious" — that's the other one we hear all the time. Think of brine shrimp as a container. When you buy brine shrimp enriched with spirulina: spirulina is extremely nutritious, but it is a powder, and fish don't eat powder. So the producer stuffs the shrimp full of spirulina, then freezes them immediately. The brine shrimp your fish love is loaded with spirulina — seriously nutritious. And even plain, a frozen brine shrimp is the whole shrimp: the eyes, the head, the liver, the heart. We humans only eat the tail.

Vita-Chem is a product we love and use ourselves at the store. It goes into any food — frozen first — and it can be used at any time. Vitamins are made for exactly this: improving fish colour and vitality. I like it especially for new fish: there is an appetite stimulant in it that makes food irresistible. A fish that won't eat, you put some in its food and it eats. It is a very good product for giving vigour, keeping diseases away, keeping problems away — it has all the good things in it. That is why we use it at the store.

Frequently asked questions

Is frozen brine shrimp actually nutritious?

Hikari credits it with fatty acids and fibre beneficial to most fish, gut-loading with bio-encapsulated multi-vitamins before freezing, and a guaranteed analysis of min. 4% crude protein at max. 92% moisture. It is a treat, not a staple: the manufacturer is explicit about that and recommends feeding it alongside a formulated diet.

What is the difference between plain, spirulina and Omega brine shrimp?

Same shrimp, three recipes. The plain one contains carotene and lists max. 92% moisture. The spirulina version adds the algae — Hikari aims it at larger fish and its moisture rises to max. 95%. The Omega version is gut-loaded with EPA and DHA oils at guaranteed minimums, and the manufacturer calls it most beneficial to marine species.

Which pack size should I choose?

The 3.5 oz cube for a single tank and precise portions with no handling. The 8, 16 or 32 oz flat packs as soon as you feed daily or run several tanks: the price per gram drops and you break off exactly what you need.

Shipping note: frozen food ships express in an insulated cooler with ice packs. Partial or complete thawing during transit is normal — especially in summer — and does not affect the product's quality for your fish. Dry ice would cost a fortune with zero quality benefit; we don't offer it. Be there to receive your package and place it directly in your freezer upon delivery.
