Hikari Bio-Pure frozen krill comes in two pack sizes — and they are not two sizes of the same product. The manufacturer makes them into two different foods.

Stick or whole krill: read this before you choose

• Cubes 3.5 oz (100 g), 32 count — item #30720. This is not whole krill. Hikari processes it using a Molecular Gastronomy technique into an easy-to-consume stick, which it describes as perfect for smaller fish.
• Flat pack 16 oz (454 g) — item #30840. This one holds the whole krill, which the manufacturer calls an excellent option for larger fish. Break off the piece you want.

If you want the whole shrimp your angels and tangs will chase down, take the flat pack. If your fish have small mouths, take the cube.

Astaxanthin, and where it comes from

Hikari describes krill that naturally contains astaxanthin and offers higher marine protein. The krill is also gut-loaded with planktonic algae, which complements its protein and amino acid profile.

Astaxanthin is the pigment reef keepers associate with fish colour. Here it is not added: it is in the animal. The manufacturer publishes no figure for it — if you see a level quoted elsewhere, it does not come from them.

How to feed it

Hikari is explicit: krill is fed as a treat. No more than your fish will consume within 30 to 45 seconds, and no more than twice daily. Remove whatever is left once the feeding period ends.

Ideal For, per the manufacturer: freshwater, marine fish and select reptiles that require a more meaty food choice.

It adds the warning it repeats across the range: live or frozen food can spoil a fish to the point where it refuses its formulated diet. Feed it for variety, not as a replacement for complete nutrition.
