Aquaforest Sea Salt — marine salt for fish and soft corals, in a 7.5 kg bag or 22 kg bucket

Sea Salt is Aquaforest's entry-level marine salt (made in Poland), built for fish-only aquariums (FOWLR) and soft coral tanks. Parameters track natural ocean water with no enrichment: phosphate-free, nitrate-free, no added amino acids or vitamin C. Two formats: the 7.5 kg (16.5 lb) resealable bag to get started or for mid-size tanks, and the 22 kg (48.5 lb) bucket for large volumes and regular water changes.

Since 2025, Sea Salt ships with Aquaforest's new formula: a tightened manufacturing process, purer raw materials and reduced iron content — the packaging shown here is the new one. Aquaforest explains the change in this short official video:

Who Sea Salt is for

  • New tanks and first setups — a simple, consistent salt to start on the right foot.
  • Fish-only aquariums (FOWLR) — fish and live rock, no demanding corals.
  • Soft coral tanks — leathers, mushrooms, zoanthids, xenia.
  • Quarantine and hospital tanks — a neutral salt for observation and treatments.
  • Large volumes and multi-tank systems — the 22 kg bucket keeps the cost per gallon down.

Official Aquaforest preparation

  • For a salinity of 30 ppt (1.022 S.G.), dissolve about 345 g (12.17 oz) of salt in 10 L (2.7 US gal) of RO/DI water.
  • Stir vigorously for about 15 minutes, until fully dissolved.
  • Use the mixed water within 3 days of dissolving (official Aquaforest guideline).
  • Check salinity with a refractometer before adding water to the tank.
  • Aquaforest recommends weekly water changes of 10 % of tank volume.

Yield per format

  • 7.5 kg bag: about 215 L (57 US gal) — the figure printed on the bag.
  • 22 kg bucket: Aquaforest does not publish a per-container yield. At the official 345 g/10 L dose (30 ppt), the bucket makes about 630 L (166 US gal) — the same math as the bag's printed 215 L. A higher target salinity means less water.

Typical parameters (Aquaforest documentation)

  • Magnesium (Mg): 1,200-1,300 mg/L
  • Calcium (Ca): 360-400 mg/L
  • Potassium (K): 300-350 mg/L
  • Alkalinity: 8.0-9.0 dKH
  • pH: 8.0-8.2
  • Phosphate-free, nitrate-free, no organic additives

Exact levels vary with target salinity — every 600 kg production batch is ICP-OES tested and the full batch analysis can be checked online. Here is how Aquaforest makes and tests its salt:

Our advice

"We run Aquaforest salts ourselves — but for our reef tanks, we use Reef Salt. Sea Salt is what I recommend for new tanks, soft coral and fish tanks, and people who don't want to over-invest: it's an economical salt that's good and still gives solid results. At the store, we've been running Reef Salt for several years."

Frequently asked questions

Can Sea Salt run an SPS reef?

Aquaforest positions Sea Salt for fish and soft corals. Its macros (Ca 360-400 mg/L, 8-9 dKH) sit below usual SPS targets. For an SPS tank, choose Reef Salt or Reef Salt+.

How long does the 22 kg bucket last on a 120 US-gal (454 L) tank?

At 10 % weekly water changes (12 US gal / 45 L per week), the bucket covers about 14 weeks — over three months. On bi-weekly changes, that doubles.

Can the bucket stay open for several months?

Yes — store it dry and reseal the lid after each mix. Ambient humidity clumps the salt; in humid climates a desiccant packet inside helps preserve the grain. And once dissolved, Aquaforest recommends using the water within 3 days.

What's the difference with Reef Salt?

Sea Salt delivers standard macros with no additives, for fish and soft corals. Reef Salt targets mixed reef tanks with parameters close to natural seawater; Reef Salt+ pushes further for demanding SPS tanks.
