Frozen Jumbo Mysis Shrimp Bio-Pure — 16 oz Flat Pack for Larger Fish - Hikari

Hikari's jumbo mysis is the same family as the regular Bio-Pure mysis, only bigger. The manufacturer describes it as a larger brackish water mysis shrimp offering an excellent protein source, with natural chitosan in a more developed shell that can support immune system health.

What sets it apart from regular mysis

Two things Hikari claims here and not on the standard version:

• A more developed shell, so more natural chitosan. The trade-off: it is tougher going for a small fish. The regular mysis is sold on the opposite quality — a thin shell that smaller fish chew through easily.
• Gut-loaded with natural algae which can improve coloration — the manufacturer makes no such claim on the plain mysis.

Hikari aims it at larger freshwater and marine fish, and also names some amphibians and turtles that benefit from higher fatty acid levels.

Pack size

16 oz (454 g) flat pack — Hikari item #31090. This is the only size the manufacturer publishes for jumbo mysis: there is no cube version. Break off the portion you need and the rest goes back in the freezer.

Ingredients and guaranteed analysis

Mysis shrimp, water, vitamin B12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (stabilized vitamin C), riboflavin (vitamin B2), thiamine mononitrate, biotin, choline chloride, folic acid, calcium pantothenate, inositol, niacin.

How to feed it

Hikari says: use as a treat, and feed no more than your fish will consume within 30 to 45 seconds, no more than twice daily. Remove anything left over once the feeding period ends.

Manufacturer warning: handling a frozen food derived from a live animal can cause the same allergic reaction as handling the live animal itself. Wash your hands immediately after use and avoid contact with your nose and mouth before washing.

Our advice

Do fish really need frozen food? Not always — good quality pellets can be enough. But I do recommend it: fish love it, it creates real interaction at feeding time, and the small bits that break loose go on to feed the benthic fauna, the corals and the whole system. It is more complete. I also recommend varying the menu: it is not good for them to always eat the same thing.

"Mysis is expensive, I'll just use grocery store shrimp" — we hear that often. But we humans only eat the tail, only the flesh. That is incomplete. A frozen mysis is the whole shrimp: the eyes, the head, the liver, the heart. Far more nutritious than what we eat ourselves. And it is frozen fast, so the nutrients are locked in. With the jumbo you are giving the same thing in a bigger bite — this is the size to grab when your fish swallow a regular mysis without even tasting it.

What is the difference between jumbo mysis and regular mysis?

The size of the shrimp and the thickness of its shell. Hikari presents the jumbo as a larger mysis with a more developed shell, so richer in chitosan, and states it is gut-loaded with natural algae that can improve coloration. The regular one is sold on the opposite quality: a thin shell that small fish chew through easily.

Can my small fish eat it?

The manufacturer aims the jumbo at medium to larger fish. For a tank of small residents, the regular Bio-Pure mysis is the right pick.

Is there a cube version?

No. Hikari publishes only the 16 oz (454 g) flat pack for jumbo mysis. If you see a cube format advertised elsewhere, it did not come from the manufacturer — write to us and we'll check with our distributor.

Shipping note: frozen food ships express in an insulated cooler with ice packs. Partial or complete thawing during transit is normal — especially in summer — and does not affect the product's quality for your fish. Dry ice would cost a fortune with zero quality benefit; we don't offer it. Be there to receive your package and place it directly in your freezer upon delivery.
