The Red Sea Filter Media Cup (part R42177) is a slotted cup that drops into your REEFER sump's sock holder, in place of the filter sock. You fill it with the media of your choice and the water runs through.

You take the sock out, drop the Media Cup in its place, and load it with whatever media you want. It's quick, it's easy to clean, and above all it needs no extra hardware: it sits straight in the sock holder that's already in your sump. No basket to buy, no reactor to plumb, no additional pump.

Do I need a special holder for it?

No. It drops into the sock holder already present in your REEFER sump, exactly where the sock used to sit.

Can it run alongside a sock?

Depending on your sump and how many positions it has, yes: some keep a sock on one side for mechanical filtration and run carbon in the cup on the other. Write to us with your tank model if you'd like us to look at it with you.

How does it get cleaned?

Pull it out, empty it, rinse it. It's a rigid cup — no fabric to launder, no sock to replace on a schedule.

Does it fit a non-Red Sea sock holder?

Its 4 inch diameter is a common format and it drops into several other brands' holders. Red Sea publishes no compatibility list beyond its own sumps, though — write to us with the brand and model of your holder and we'll check it with you before you buy.
