Our advice: carbon is worse than filter floss
Carbon is fundamentally a chemical filter: it absorbs impurities out of your water. But it doesn't stay chemical for long if you forget about it.
Like filter floss, bacteria eventually move in and it turns into a biological filter. Same trap: the day you finally change it, you throw out the bacterial colony that relocated into it — and your tank takes an ammonia spike.
Except carbon has a nastier side. As it ages and reaches saturation, it releases what it had absorbed. Everything it patiently pulled out of your water goes right back in. Old carbon isn't neutral: it works against you.
That's why the pack has 4 pouches. One pouch, one week. Change it, don't forget it.
The rest of your filter chamber
- Reef Casa Filter Floss — mechanical filtration, upstream of the carbon. Same logic: change it often.
- Reef Casa Bacteria Hotel Blocks — biological filtration, placed after the carbon. This is where your bacteria belong, not in your disposable media.
- Reef Casa Filter Media Bags — if you run loose carbon or GFO alongside.
Fits your tank
- Reef Casa Cube 15 — 15 gallon all-in-one nano reef.

Frequently asked questions
How often should the carbon be changed?
Reef Casa recommends every week for best results — which is what explains the 4-pouch, one-month pack. Our advice: don't stretch it. Saturated carbon releases what it absorbed, and forgotten carbon becomes a bacteria substrate you will end up throwing away.
Can I use it in freshwater?
Yes. Reef Casa lists it as suitable for saltwater and freshwater alike.
Do I need to put it in a bag?
No, all 4 pouches arrive pre-bagged. Drop them straight into the filter chamber.
