Why use refugium lighting?

Macroalgae cultivated in a refugium offer natural biological filtration without chemicals or resins. By regularly harvesting a portion of the algae, you physically export excess nutrients from your aquarium. This method is used by both beginner and advanced reefers to control nuisance algae in the main tank and improve water quality for SPS and LPS corals.

Reverse light cycle and pH stability

By programming your refugium lighting to an inverse cycle to the main lighting (on at night, off during the day), macroalgae photosynthesize while corals are at rest. This process consumes CO₂ produced at night and stabilizes the aquarium's pH, preventing nocturnal pH drops that stress corals and invertebrates.

The choice depends on the size of your sump compartment and the type of macroalgae cultivated. Important criteria are the light spectrum (optimized for algae photosynthesis), power (adapted to the refugium volume), and mounting method (magnetic, clip, or suspended).
