The AI Prime Fuge 16HD isn't a repurposed reef light. It's a 46W fixture that AquaIllumination says is "optimized to put all of its power towards growing algae, and grow it fast." Ten of its fourteen LEDs are red. That's the whole difference.

Where the 46 Watts Go

AquaIllumination publishes the exact power split per channel — a rare bit of transparency:

Add it up: 46W total, and 28.4W in the red. That's 62% of the fixture's power sitting in the wavelengths that put macroalgae to work.

Why a Dedicated Refugium Spectrum

Macroalgae like chaetomorpha don't photosynthesize the way corals do. A reef fixture puts its power into blue and royal blue, because that's what zooxanthellae need. Macroalgae work in the red.

That's why a refugium lit by an old recycled reef light grows sluggishly: the spectrum is off target. Chaeto that grows fast is chaeto that consumes — it pulls nitrate and phosphate out of your water by building its own biomass. The more it grows, the more it exports.

Fan Maintenance — True of Every LED Fixture

This applies to every LED fixture, whatever the brand: they cool through a fan, and a fan working through dust makes the unit run hot. Heat is one of the big causes of failure in aquarium lighting.

AquaIllumination documents this officially for Prime fixtures: the wire mesh fan guard can fill with dust and debris, and a clean fan grill is important to allow for proper cooling and ventilation. Here's their official video:

Our advice from the shop, and it counts double here: a Fuge lives over a sump, inside a closed cabinet. It's humid, often dusty, and above all nobody ever looks at it. You see your display light every day; you open the cabinet door on your refugium twice a year. Put it on your maintenance calendar: compressed air on the grill, two minutes.

No vinegar or products here: this is dry dust, not calcium.

Mounting — Sold Separately

The Prime Fuge includes no mount. The box holds the fixture, the power adapter, and the quick start guide. It uses all the Prime mounting hardware:
