Size

Chemi-Pure Blue is the top of the Chemi-Pure family. Boyd builds it around its QuickWash carbon — a 0.8 mm extruded activated carbon with 30% more surface area than its original carbon — plus two hybrid ion-exchange resins. Formulated for reef, marine, jellyfish and high-pH freshwater aquariums, it rapidly pulls out organics, odors, phenols, toxins, medications, dissolved metals, phosphates and silicates, while raising redox and helping stabilize pH.

Fincasters — the channel Boyd links from its own site — introduces Chemi-Pure Blue and where it fits in the line.

The angle nobody else writes: carbon dust and HLLE

Boyd puts it in plain words: the new carbon's structure is "harder, cleaner and reduces the potential of HLLE developing in your fish due to fine carbon dust particles". Head and Lateral Line Erosion linked to cheap carbon dust is something our store has observed for years — here, the manufacturer itself confirms it.

What Blue covers

  • 0.8 mm extruded QuickWash carbon + two hybrid ion-exchange resins
  • Organics, odors, phenols, toxins, medications, dissolved metals, phosphates and silicates
  • Raises redox, helps stabilize pH; lasts 2 to 4 months
  • Reef, marine, jellyfish and high-pH freshwater — and excellent for African cichlids per Boyd
  • Official coverage: small size 35-50 gal (132-189 L) · 11 oz 75-100 gal (284-379 L) · 44 oz Grande 300 gal (1,136 L)

How to use it

Rinse the pouch for 5 to 10 seconds under running water, then set it in a high-flow area — water should pass gently through the bag, not around it. During a Chemiclean treatment, pull the Blue and put in a fresh one afterward.

Our advice

The Blue will polish the water even further, and go after the phosphates too. It's the highest end of the Chemi-Pure line.

Every Chemi-Pure line runs from the small size up to the bulk: going bulk is the way to save — an advantage ReefSolution puts on the table for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the QuickWash carbon in Chemi-Pure Blue?

An extruded activated carbon in 0.8 mm pellets, with 30% more surface area than Boyd's original carbon — harder, cleaner, less dust.

Does Chemi-Pure Blue help against HLLE?

Boyd states that its carbon's harder, cleaner structure reduces the potential of HLLE linked to fine carbon dust particles. That's the manufacturer talking — and it matches what we've seen in the store for years.

Which aquariums is Blue formulated for?

Reef, marine, jellyfish and high-pH freshwater per Boyd — who also calls it excellent for African cichlids.

Grande 44 oz or the 6-pack?

One large bag versus six pouches in rotation. The bulk is cheaper per ounce; the Grande needs a compartment that can take it.
