The Goniopora, often called the flower coral, is a Large Polyp Stony Coral (LPS) renowned for its long, flower-like polyps that gently sway under the water flow. Available in a range of colors, including green, pink, purple, and red, the Goniopora is an outstanding aesthetic addition to a reef aquarium. While it can be challenging for beginners, it is ideal for intermediate to advanced aquarists who can provide stable conditions and consistent care.

Care Guide:

1. Tank Size and Setup:

• Minimum volume: 20 gallons (75 liters) to ensure stable parameters.

• Lighting: Moderate to intense (recommended PAR: 80–150 PAR). High-quality LED or T5 lighting is essential to support photosynthesis.

• Placement:

• Middle to lower areas of the tank, away from intense light.

• Leave at least 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) of space around the coral to prevent its long polyps from touching other corals.

2. Water Parameters:

• Temperature: 75–79°F (24–26°C).

• Salinity: 1.024–1.026 (specific gravity).

• pH: 7.8–8.4.

• Calcium: 400–450 ppm.

• Alkalinity (KH): 8–12 dKH.

• Magnesium: 1250–1450 ppm.

• Nitrates: Below 10 ppm (ideally 2–5 ppm).

• Phosphates: Below 0.05 ppm.

3. Flow:

• Low to moderate. Gentle flow encourages full polyp extension without causing damage.

4. Feeding:

• While it relies partially on photosynthesis, Goniopora benefits from supplemental feeding:

• Phytoplankton, zooplankton, or specialized LPS coral foods.

• Frequency: 2–3 times weekly, preferably at night when the polyps are extended.

5. Compatibility and Tank Mates:

• Reef-safe: Yes, but its delicate polyps are sensitive to aggressive corals.

• Ideal companions: Peaceful fish like gobies, clownfish, or non-aggressive dwarf angelfish.

• Avoid: Fish or invertebrates that may nip at its delicate polyps, such as certain crabs and butterflyfish.

6. Maintenance and Growth:

• Gently clean the coral’s base to prevent debris and algae buildup.

• Perform regular water changes (10–15% biweekly) to maintain optimal water quality.

• Growth is slow but steady under optimal conditions.

7. Signs of Health:

• Fully extended polyps swaying gently in the current.

• Vibrant colors with no signs of bleaching or tissue recession.

8. Special Precautions:

• Long polyps are sensitive to mechanical stress; avoid direct handling.

• Maintain stable water parameters, as Goniopora is sensitive to sudden fluctuations.

• Provide a calm environment, as this coral can become stressed by abrupt movements or aggressive fish.
