Seachem Reef Iodide 250 mL — Stabilized Iodide Supplement for Reef Aquariums
Available
Seachem Reef Iodide 250 mL is a concentrated and stabilized potassium iodide supplement specifically formulated for reef aquariums. Iodide is an essential element for marine invertebrates, soft corals, and crustaceans—but it degrades very quickly in aquariums through biological use and chemical depletion. Reef Iodide replenishes these levels accurately and safely, without ever introducing toxic free iodine into your system.
Iodide ≠ Iodine — A Critical Distinction
Most iodine supplements available on the market are either crude potassium iodide or Lugol's solution —a medical disinfectant highly concentrated in free iodine, intended for surgical disinfection and not for reef aquariums . Free iodine is as toxic as chlorine and poses serious health risks to your corals and invertebrates, even in small doses.
Reef Iodide uses only iodide (reduced, ionic form) complexed with a stabilizing compound that maintains the product in its iodide form under all storage and aquarium conditions. No conversion to iodine or iodate is possible. Iodide is as safe as chloride—and it's the only truly bioavailable form for your specimens.
Who Benefits from the Iodide Supplement
- Soft corals: gorgonians, sarcophytons, xenia, and other alcyonarians actively consume iodide—its maintenance is directly linked to the vitality and expansion of the polyps.
- Invertebrates: sea urchins, starfish, sea cucumbers, and molluscs use iodide in their metabolic processes.
- Crustaceans: shrimp and crabs need iodide for the synthesis of their new cuticle during molting — a deficiency can lead to incomplete or fatal molting
- Systems with powerful skimmers: aggressive skimming accelerates iodide depletion, making regular supplementation essential
Seachem Official Usage Protocol
- Maintenance dosage: 5 mL (1 capful) per 200 litres, every two days
- To increase levels: 1 mL per 80 liters per day — raises iodide by approximately 0.10 mg/L
- Target level: 0.06–0.08 mg/L — measure with MultiTest™ Iodine & Iodide, 6 to 12 hours after the last dose
- Note: Iodide levels naturally decrease after a few days of use and chemical depletion — dosing frequency varies depending on the invertebrate load in your system
- Storage: No refrigeration required
Yield of the 250 mL format
- 200-litre aquarium: approximately 50 doses (maintenance every 2 days) — that is more than 3 months of use
- 400-liter aquarium: approximately 25 doses at the standard maintenance dosage
Reef Iodide is part of Seachem's Reef Pack Enhancer , alongside Reef Calcium and Reef Strontium — a trio designed for reefs with high densities of invertebrates and soft corals.
