Centropyge bicolor - The bicolor angelfish is a spectacular dwarf angelfish, recognizable by its distinct yellow/blue coloration. Highly active and constantly foraging among the rocks, it adds movement and a unique reef presence to an established marine aquarium.
This species is ideal for a mature tank with plenty of live rock, hiding places, and a natural microfauna. Like many Centropyge species, it is considered reef-safe, but with caution : it may nibble on certain corals (especially LPS), zoanthids, giant clam mantles, and fleshy polyps, depending on the individual. With a good diet and in a stable tank, the risk decreases, but is never eliminated.
Adult size: Approximately 12–15 cm (5–6 in)
Difficulty level: Intermediate
Minimum recommended volume: 75 US gal and up (ideally 90+ gal) with live rock, shaded areas, and shelters
Temperament and compatibilities:
- Semi-aggressive, especially towards other dwarf angelfish and similarly shaped fish
- Best compatibility: peaceful to semi-aggressive fish (tangs, wrasses, clownfish, robust gobies)
- Avoid: adding several Centropyge to a small tank, or adding them late to a tank that is already dominated by Centropyge.
Reef compatibility (Reef Safe): With caution. Variable risk of nibbling on LPS, zoanthus, large polyp corals, giant clams.
Food :
- Omnivore with a strong tendency to graze
- Recommended: angelfish food with spirulina and seaweed, nori, mysis, enriched brine shrimp, quality pellets, sponge-based food (if available)
- Tip: Feeding in small portions 2–3 times a day helps reduce coral pecking.
Suggested water parameters:
- Temperature: 24–26 °C
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Alkalinity: 7–9 dKH
- Stable NO3 and PO4, mature tank recommended
Ecological role in the aquarium: Opportunistic grazer that participates in the control of biofilm and micro-algae on the rock, while also enlivening the decor.
Acclimation and care: Slow acclimation, dim lighting initially, plenty of hiding places. A stable and well-oxygenated tank is essential. Monitor appetite during the first few days and quickly offer several types of food.
