Centropyge multicolor - The multicolored angelfish is a rare and highly sought-after dwarf angelfish prized for its rich colors and jewel-like appearance. Often more discreet initially, it becomes an excellent observation fish in a mature marine aquarium, where it explores live rock and grazes continuously.

This species particularly appreciates a highly structured aquascape (plenty of caves and overhangs) and a stable environment. Like most Centropyge, it is cautiously classified as reef-safe : some individuals may nibble on LPS corals, zoanthids, fleshy polyps, and giant clam mantles. Regular, varied feeding and a well-established tank reduce this risk, but can never be completely guaranteed.

Adult size: Approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 in)

Difficulty level: Intermediate

Minimum recommended volume: 55 US gal and up (ideally 75+ gal) with abundant live rock and hiding places

Temperament and compatibilities:

  • Semi-aggressive, especially towards other dwarf angelfish and fish of a similar profile
  • Good compatibility: peaceful to semi-aggressive fish (clownfish, gobies, blennies, non-aggressive wrasses, tangs depending on tank size)
  • Avoid: predatory/harassing fish (large aggressive wrasses, triggerfish, large dottybacks), or late introduction into a dominated tank

Predators and risks: Can be intimidated or injured by larger, territorial fish. A setup with hiding places and a well-planned introduction are essential.

Reef compatibility (Reef Safe): With caution. Variable risk of nibbling on LPS, zoanthus, large polyp corals, giant clams.

Food :

  • Omnivorous grazer
  • Recommended: "angelfish" mixes (with spirulina/algae), nori, mysis, enriched brine shrimp, high-quality pellets, vegetable-rich foods; sponge-based foods if available
  • Tip: 2–3 small feedings per day help limit coral pecking.

Suggested water parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–26 °C
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Alkalinity: 7–9 dKH
  • Mature tank recommended, stable nutrients (avoid rapid fluctuations)

Ecological role in the aquarium: Opportunistic grazer that helps reduce biofilm and certain micro-algae on live rock, while adding a very "reef-like" presence to the decor.

Acclimation and care: Slow acclimation, dim lighting initially, plenty of hiding places. Quickly offer a variety of foods (frozen + pellets) to ensure a healthy appetite. Watch for signs of stress and avoid overly dominant housemates.
