The Emerald Crab ( Mithrax sculptus ) is one of the most effective algae-controlling invertebrates in reef aquariums. Its dark green to olive-green carapace and broad, flattened claws make it easily identifiable. Native to the Caribbean, it specializes in fighting resistant algae.

His role in the baccalaureate

The only cleaner capable of efficiently consuming Bryopsis —a green, feathery algae that is extremely difficult to eliminate. It methodically scrapes rocks in areas inaccessible to snails and sea urchins. It also consumes leftover food between the rocks.

Recommended conditions

  • Temperature: 23–27°C — Salinity: 1.023–1.026
  • pH: 7.8–8.4 (normal natural day/night fluctuation in a reef tank)
  • Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH — Minimum volume: 150L (max 1 per 150–200L)
  • Numerous essential rocks and cavities

Behavior

Primarily nocturnal. The shed shell from molting can give the impression of death. Compatible with corals under normal conditions.

Food

Supplement with nori, herbivore pellets or blanched vegetables in very clean containers.
