Purigen 100 ml Sachet — 500% More Effective Organic Resin | Seachem

$16.99

Available

Seachem Purigen 100 ml sachet is a synthetic macroporous adsorption resin that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity exceeding all competing products by more than 500%. Unlike conventional ion exchange resins, Purigen is specifically designed as an organic recovery resin. It controls ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste before it releases these harmful compounds. Suitable for use in both saltwater and freshwater.

Main advantages

  • Organic adsorption capacity exceeding that of competing products by more than 500%
  • Spherical and macro-porous macroreticular polymer — increased usable surface area compared to standard spherical resins
  • Controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous waste at the source
  • Minimal impact on trace elements — significantly increases redox potential
  • Regenerable with bleach — visual indicator of depletion (light blonde → dark brown)

Use in reef and marine aquariums

Purigen selectively targets nitrogenous organic compounds, the primary source of waste in an aquarium. Fish, corals, and invertebrates produce nitrogenous waste that Purigen removes faster and more completely than any other product. It polishes the water for unparalleled clarity while increasing the system's redox potential. Purigen can be used in a canister filter, media chamber, box filter, or any high-flow area of a filter. Each 250 ml treats up to 1000 L (250 US gallons) for up to six months.

Instructions for use

  • Rinse before use
  • Place in a fine mesh bag (180 microns or less) such as the Seachem The Bag
  • Position to maximize water flow through the resin
  • 100 ml treats up to 400 L (100 US gallons) for a maximum duration of six months
  • Exhaustion is indicated by a pronounced color change to dark brown or black.

Regeneration

  • Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metallic container, in a well-ventilated area.
  • Use regular household bleach with 8.25% hypochlorite (perfume-free, dye-free, not splash-proof type)
  • Rinse thoroughly, then soak for 8 hours in a solution of 4 tablespoons of Seachem Prime per cup of water.
  • Rinse thoroughly. The original color and activity are restored.
  • Do not reuse if a chlorine odor is detectable — test with a chlorine test kit if in doubt

Manufacturer's precautions

  • Some amine-based protective coating products can permanently clog the Purigen and make regeneration difficult.
  • Seachem Prime, Safe, and StressGuard are NOT amine-based and are compatible with Purigen.
  • Store the Purigen in a little water between uses to prevent the beads from drying out and cracking.
  • Purigen does not affect general hardness (GH) or calcium/magnesium levels.

Available formats

  • 100 ml (sachet)
  • 250 ml
  • 500 ml
  • 1 L
  • 2 L
  • 4 L

Why choose Purigen from ReefSolution?

For optimal chemical filtration, combine Seachem Purigen with Seachem The Bag as a filter bag and Seachem MatrixCarbon to extend the Purigen's lifespan. Use Seachem Prime as a dechlorinator during regeneration. For high nitrate levels despite the use of Purigen, add Seachem Matrix or Seachem de*nitrate as denitrification biomedia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Purigen replace activated charcoal?

Purigen is superior to charcoal for removing organic compounds and does not have the negative impacts of charcoal. However, the two are compatible: using charcoal with Purigen extends the lifespan of Purigen.

How do I know when Purigen is depleted?

The Purigen gradually changes color, going from pale blonde to dark brown, almost black. This visual change clearly indicates when it's time to regenerate it with bleach.

Does Purigen directly eliminate nitrates?

No. Purigen eliminates nitrogenous organic waste before it is converted into ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate by bacteria, thus indirectly reducing nitrates over time. For already high nitrate levels, perform a water change and use Seachem Matrix as a denitrification biomedia.
