Red Sea ReefRun Dual Controller — 2-Device DC Controller ReefBeat Self-Leveling - Red Sea
Available
The Red Sea ReefRun Dual Controller is the controller that drives the DC devices in the ReefBeat ecosystem. It runs up to 2 devices at the same time: two ReefRun DC pumps, or one ReefRun DC pump and one REEFER DC Skimmer. One controller for two devices — that's where the savings are.
Who needs this controller?
The answer isn't the same for every Red Sea DC device. Here's the distinction, as Red Sea documents it:
- REEFER DC Skimmer — required. The PSK DC-1200 pump and the skim sensor have no built-in control electronics. Without the controller, the DC skimmer does not run. The same applies to the REEFER Skimmer DC Pump Upgrade Kit.
- ReefRun G2 pumps (4000, 6000, 8000, 12000) — optional. They have an integrated Flow Controller: they switch on, off, and adjust on their own, with no controller and no internet connection. The ReefRun Dual is what unlocks the ReefBeat features — daily schedules, notifications, automated modes, wave mode.
- ReefRun G1 pumps (5500, 7000, 9000) — required. That generation has no integrated flow controller and needs the ReefRun Dual to operate.
The controller is sold separately and is not included with any device.
One controller, two devices
The ReefRun Dual Controller has two independent pump ports. You can connect:
- One ReefRun DC pump + one REEFER DC Skimmer: the most common combination on a REEFER system
- Two ReefRun DC pumps: they can be "linked" to work as a single unit, sharing the same schedule and the same on/off actions
The controller automatically identifies which pump model is connected to each port. For a skimmer, you must select your model (RSK 300, 600, or 900) in the app: all three use the same PSK DC-1200 pump, but each has a default intensity calibrated to the size of its reaction chamber and the performance of its venturi.
What the controller does on its own, and what ReefBeat adds
On the unit itself, you get the essentials: a dial for each port lets you stop and restart each pump and adjust its flow intensity. LED indicators show intensity in 10% bands, the status of each pump, the skim sensor status, and the Wi-Fi connection. The indicators also flag a disconnected pump or a pump in a malfunction state (stalled or out of the water).
Connected over Wi-Fi to the ReefBeat app, everything else opens up: daily schedules, wave programs, notifications on your phone, remote control, and intensity adjustment to within 1%. The app installs on a phone or tablet with an internet connection.
DC Skimmer Self-Leveling
This is the port that changes everything for DC skimmer owners. The controller has a dedicated port for the dual-action skim sensor, which enables Self-Leveling:
- Over-skim regulation: the sensor in the neck monitors foam wetness. When it exceeds the threshold, the pump intensity is immediately reduced, then raised again bit by bit until stable skimming is restored. The threshold is adjustable in the app.
- Full-cup regulation: the sensor in the collection cup detects when it needs emptying. The pump reduces its intensity to keep aerating the water rather than shutting everything down.
The skim sensor is not included with the controller. It comes with the REEFER DC Skimmer or with the upgrade kit. Calibration happens on first use, guided step by step in the app: each probe must be calibrated separately, immersed in a cup of water taken from the sump — never both at once, never directly in the sump.
ReefBeat Quick Actions
- Feed: adjustable duration, intensity, and start delay. The DC skimmer can only be switched off, not slowed down. The delay lets you, for example, shut the skimmer off a few minutes before the return pump.
- Maintenance / Emergency: shuts down every configured device. On restart, a return delay is set per pump — the return pump first to restore the water level, the skimmer a few minutes later.
- Daily schedule: up to 10 time slots per day, each with its own intensity.
- Notifications: pump blocked or running dry, full skimmer cup, connection lost.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need the ReefRun Dual Controller with my ReefRun G2 pump?
Not to run it. ReefRun G2 pumps (4000, 6000, 8000, 12000) have an integrated Flow Controller: you can switch them on, off, and adjust their intensity right on the pump, with no controller and no internet. The ReefRun Dual becomes useful when you want to bring them into ReefBeat: daily schedules, wave mode, run-dry notifications, Feed and Maintenance quick actions. G1 generation pumps (5500, 7000, 9000), on the other hand, need the controller to operate.
Is the ReefRun Dual Controller required for my DC skimmer?
Yes. The PSK DC-1200 pump and the skim sensor have no built-in control electronics — the controller powers and drives them. Without it, the DC skimmer does not run, and the same is true of the REEFER Skimmer DC Pump Upgrade Kit. The upside is that a single controller covers two devices: if you have a DC skimmer and a DC return pump, you only buy one.
Is the skim sensor included with the controller?
No. The dual-action skim sensor comes with the REEFER DC Skimmer or with the REEFER Skimmer DC Pump Upgrade Kit. The controller has the dedicated port to plug it in, but the sensor itself ships with the skimmer. If you're only connecting return pumps, you don't need one.
Can I control two return pumps with a single ReefRun Dual?
Yes. Two ReefRun DC pumps can be connected to the two ports and "linked" in the app to work as a single unit — same schedule, same on/off actions. If you use them as wave pumps in a closed loop, they can be synced to pulse together or anti-synced to pulse alternately.
Does it work without internet?
Partly. The controller's dial lets you switch each pump on, off, and adjust its intensity with no network. An "offline / direct mode" also lets you set up devices without an internet connection. However, remote access, notifications, and use across multiple phones require a permanent Wi-Fi connection. Skimmer Self-Leveling itself keeps working locally.
Can the controller go in the sump?
No. The RRDC is designed to operate in a humid environment, but it is not waterproof. Mount it on its bracket, in a dry spot in the cabinet, away from splashes. Keep it clean and free of salt deposits.
