Aquaforest Carbon 1000 ml — steam-activated phosphate-free activated carbon

The Carbon 1000 ml is Aquaforest's high-performance activated carbon, steam-activated — a process that sets this product apart from carbon activated with phosphoric acid. Practical outcome: Aquaforest Carbon releases no residual phosphate into the tank, unlike some budget carbons that spike measurable PO4 during the first hours of use.

The 1,000 ml jar treats a mid-sized reef (100-200 L) with a 4-week renewal per Aquaforest guidelines. Usable in a fluidized reactor (AF90 or AF110), a filter bag in the sump, or an integrated media compartment on the filter.

What the Carbon does for the tank

  • Removes dissolved organic compounds — dissolved pollutants, urea, decomposition products.
  • Better water clarity — strips tannins and yellow pigments that filter light.
  • Absorbs coral toxins — many soft corals release competitive allelochemicals.
  • Removes treatment residues — disinfectants, medications, dyes.
  • Phosphate-free — no PO4 contamination at startup.

Aquaforest official use

  • Dose: 100 ml of Carbon per 100 L of tank water.
  • Recommended flow: about 500 L/h through the media.
  • Rinse before installing: with clear water to remove carbon fines.
  • Renewal: every 4 weeks to keep maximum efficacy.
  • Media compatibility: usable in a fluidized reactor (AF90/AF110) or classic filter bag.

Why choose Aquaforest at ReefSolution

  • Carbon 5,000 ml — the economy large format for established tanks with steady consumption.
  • AF90 Media Reactor — the small fluidized reactor ideal to load the Carbon 1 L.
  • AF110 Media Reactor — the mid-tier reactor for 200-400 L tanks with a carbon/GFO double load.

Frequently asked questions

Why is steam-activated carbon better?

The steam process activates the carbon without phosphoric acid, which avoids any PO4 residue at startup. On an SPS reef sensitive to the smallest phosphate swing, that difference matters — an acid-activated carbon can spike PO4 0.05-0.10 ppm over the first hours of use.

How long does the Carbon stay active?

Aquaforest recommends renewing every 4 weeks to hold maximum efficacy. Past that, adsorption capacity drops fast — the carbon stays in the tank but its effect declines. On a low-organic tank, 6-8 weeks is still workable.

Can I use Carbon in a simple filter bag?

Yes — place the 100 ml/100 L in a fine-mesh filter bag in the sump, at a good-flow point. Correct efficacy but lower than a fluidized reactor where water/media contact is optimal. On low-flow tanks, an AF90 or AF110 reactor is strongly recommended to maximize output.
