Aquaforest KH Buffer 5 kg — stable alkalinity large format for reef aquariums

The KH Buffer 5 kg ships Aquaforest's alkaline bicarbonate in an economy large bucket for established reef tanks, multi-tank setups, and frag farms. Same recipe as the 1200 g jar — same saturation concentration at 80 g/L of RO/DI water. The 5 kg format delivers several years of use on a mid-sized reef or covers multiple tanks at once without restocking.

Balling use

  • KH stock solution: 80 g per liter of RO/DI water — saturated solution.
  • Component C Strong add-on: 5 ml per liter of KH solution for advanced Balling.
  • Balanced dosing: strictly equal shares with Calcium and Magnesium/RMS.
  • Add zone: high-flow area in the tank to avoid local precipitation.

Alkalinity targets

  • SPS ULNS tanks: 6.5-8.0 dKH.
  • Mixed-reef tanks: 7-9 dKH.
  • LPS and soft coral tanks: 8-11 dKH.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a 5 kg bucket last on a 400 L tank?

On a 400 L reef with moderate SPS/LPS consumption (about 500 g of KH Buffer per month), the 5 kg bucket covers 10 months. On a high-growth SPS tank with sustained draw (800-1,000 g/month), duration drops to 5-6 months.

Does the 5 kg KH Buffer contain additives?

Aquaforest lists a formulation based on purified sodium bicarbonate. Depending on recipe revisions, a carbonate buffer may be added to improve pH stability. Check the specific batch label for detailed composition.

How should I store the opened bucket?

Reseal the lid tightly after each draw and store in a dry location. Sodium bicarbonate is not very hygroscopic but can absorb atmospheric CO₂ — dry storage preserves its full alkaline power.
