Aquaforest Magnesium 750 g — stable magnesium supply for reef aquariums

The Aquaforest Magnesium 750 g is the powder magnesium salt for the classic Balling protocol, formulated from purified magnesium chloride. Used to prepare the magnesium stock solution (Balling Part 3), it offsets Mg consumption by hard corals and holds the Ca/Mg ratio stable to block abiotic calcium carbonate precipitation.

The 750 g jar covers several months of use on a 100-300 L reef paired with Calcium (Part 1) and KH Buffer (Part 2).

Balling use

  • Stock solution: dissolve 25 g of Magnesium (ideally alongside Reef Mineral Salt) in 1 L of RO/DI water.
  • Component K Strong add-on: 5 ml per liter of solution for advanced Balling (concentrated potassium).
  • Balanced dosing: strictly equal shares with the Calcium and KH Buffer solutions.
  • Add zone: high-flow, away from the Calcium add zone.

Mg targets

  • Reef magnesium: 1,180-1,460 ppm (aim 1,300-1,400).
  • Ca/Mg ratio: ~3.2 to prevent abiotic precipitation.
  • Mg never below 1,150 ppm — beyond that, KH-Ca stability degrades quickly.

Specifications

Frequently asked questions

Should I add Reef Mineral Salt to the Mg solution?

Aquaforest recommends preparing Balling Part 3 by pairing Magnesium and Reef Mineral Salt in the same stock solution — the salt supplies missing trace elements (K, I, Br, F, Ba). On a mature SPS tank, that add-on is especially important for coral coloration and stable hard coral growth.

How long does a 750 g jar last on a 200 L tank?

On a 200 L tank with moderate consumption, Balling prep uses about 50-100 g of Magnesium per month. A 750 g jar covers 7 to 15 months. On a high-growth SPS tank, duration drops to 4-5 months.

Is the powder hygroscopic?

Yes — magnesium chloride is very hygroscopic and can turn into paste on contact with moisture. Store the jar in a very dry location, tightly resealed after each use. A desiccant packet inside the jar helps preservation in humid climates.
