Cryptocentrus cinctus (Yellow watchman goby)

The orange-headed sentinel goby is a fish with a fascinating character and charming appearance, ideal for a community reef aquarium. Known for its symbiotic association with the pistol shrimp, it is an active bottom-dwelling fish that helps maintain the substrate by sifting it.

Key features
  • Difficulty level: Easy.
  • Adult size: Up to 10 cm.
  • Temperament: Peaceful, but territorial towards other gobies of the same species, unless it is a pair.
  • Minimum volume: 114 liters (30 gallons).

Aquarium conditions
  • Temperature: 24-28 °C.
  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025.
  • pH: 8.1–8.4.
  • Décor: A sandy substrate at least 5 to 7 cm deep is essential to allow for burrow construction. Ensure that any rock structures are stable, as the fish may dig beneath them.
  • Lid: A tight-fitting lid is necessary to prevent popping.

Food
  • Type: Carnivore.
  • Diet: In the wild, it feeds on small invertebrates found in the sand. In an aquarium, offer enriched frozen meaty foods (mysis, brine shrimp), flakes, and sinking pellets.
  • Frequency: 2 to 3 times a day. It is important to ensure it receives enough food, as more active fish could outcompete it.

Compatibility and behavior
  • In reef aquariums: Considered safe for corals (reef-safe).
  • Compatibility: Gets along well with most peaceful fish and can form a fascinating symbiotic bond with a pistol shrimp.

  • Symbiosis: If the goby is associated with a pistol shrimp, the shrimp will build and maintain the burrow, while the goby will act as a lookout to warn of predators.
  • Color variation: The sentinel goby can vary in color, ranging from bright yellow to gray, or even brown. Its color can adjust depending on the substrate.
