Nuclear Palythoa – Explosive Yellow Sun Polyp

It’s hard to remain indifferent to the Nuclear Palythoa. This iconic morph in the reef hobby displays a vibrant chartreuse yellow—almost radioactive—with bright green tentacles that encircle each polyp like a luminous crown. In a dense colony, the effect is striking: a carpet of yellow suns that instantly brightens any reef aquarium, even under standard lighting.

Characteristics

  • Color: Intense chartreuse yellow oral disc, fluorescent bright green tentacles
  • Shape: Well-developed round polyps, typical of Palythoa
  • Growth: Colonial – spreads rapidly over substrate and rocks
  • Fluorescence: High, particularly visible under blue/actinic lighting

Recommended Parameters

  • Lighting: Moderate to high (PAR 75–200) – adapts well to different intensities
  • Flow: Low to moderate, indirect
  • Temperature: 24–27 °C
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026
  • Difficulty Level: Beginner – very robust, fast growth

Placement

Place this Palythoa on the substrate or on a low rock, in an area with moderate flow. It quickly colonizes its environment and can be easily fragged. Avoid direct contact with other aggressive corals and give it space to grow.

⚠️ Safety Note: Palythoa may contain palytoxin. Always handle with gloves and avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes. Do not heat water containing these corals.
