The Tube Anemone ( Cerianthus sp.) is a ceriantharian—not a true anemone—living in a membranous tube buried in the sandy substrate. Its double crown of tentacles creates a spectacular visual effect. It is not reef-safe —its tentacles are extremely stinging and will capture anything they touch.

Requirements

  • Deep sandy substrate required — minimum 15–20 cm
  • Lighting: low to moderate — 50–150 PAR
  • Water flow: very low to moderate
  • Temperature: 24–27°C — Salinity: 1.023–1.026
  • pH: 7.8–8.4 (normal natural day/night fluctuation in a reef tank)
  • FOWLR Baccalaureate recommended

Behavior

Primarily nocturnal. Extends its tentacles at night. Never remove from its tube — fatal.

Food

Frozen brine shrimp or fine planktonic food 2–3 times per week.
