The Welsophyllia, also known as the Open Brain Coral, is a stunning LPS (Large Polyp Stony Coral) species cherished for its vibrant colors and unique, fleshy appearance. Native to shallow reef environments, this coral is an exquisite addition to any reef aquarium, serving as a striking centerpiece with its glowing hues ranging from neon green to deep red.

Care Guide:

1. Tank Size and Setup:

Recommended volume: Minimum 25 gallons (100 liters).

Lighting: Moderate to strong. Use high-quality LED fixtures to enhance their colors.

Placement: Choose a low-flow area to avoid damaging their delicate tissues.

2. Water Parameters:

Temperature: 75–80°F (24–27°C).

Salinity: 1.024–1.026 (specific gravity).

pH: 8.1–8.4.

Calcium: 400–450 ppm.

Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH.

Magnesium: 1200–1350 ppm.

3. Feeding:

While Welsophyllia corals are primarily photosynthetic due to their symbiotic zooxanthellae, they benefit from supplemental feedings.

Feed them once or twice a week with:

Frozen plankton.

Protein-enriched coral foods.

Small pieces of shrimp or enriched brine shrimp.

4. Compatibility and Tank Mates:

Reef-safe: Yes, but provide ample space.

Keep away from aggressive or fast-growing corals.

Avoid herbivorous fish like tangs that may nibble on their soft tissues.

5. Growth and Maintenance:

Slow-growing but hardy with proper care.

Regularly clean the coral surface to prevent debris buildup.

Perform weekly water changes of 10% to maintain water quality.

6. Signs of Good Health:

Puffy, vibrant polyps.

No signs of tissue loss or bleaching.

7. Special Precautions:

Avoid handling soft tissues with bare hands.

Protect from sudden changes in water parameters.
