Why rent a PAR meter?

The Apogee MQ-210 PAR meter allows you to precisely measure PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) in your reef aquarium to adjust your lighting and optimize coral growth. Instead of investing over $500 in a device you'll use a few times a year, rent it from ReefSolution for $69.99 and get the same results.

Rental Content

  • 1 x Apogee MQ-210 handheld meter (not waterproof — keep out of water)
  • 1 x Apogee AM-320 underwater sensor wand calibrated for saltwater with 2m waterproof cable

The AM-320 wand is the underwater sensor specifically calibrated for saltwater. It incorporates a blued silicon photodiode with custom optical filters in an anodized aluminum body with an acrylic diffuser. Immersion effect correction is pre-programmed into the MQ-210 meter — readings are accurate out of the box, no additional calculations required.

Important: Only the AM-320 wand and cable are waterproof. Never immerse or wet the MQ-210 meter.

PAR Guide — Requirements by Coral Type

  • 50-100 PAR: Mushrooms, zoanthids, and soft corals
  • 100-200 PAR: LPS, clams, and some SPS
  • 200-500 PAR: Acropora, Montipora, and demanding SPS
  • 600-1000 PAR: Specialized SPS in ultra-intense lighting

About the Apogee MQ-210

The Apogee MQ-210 quantum meter is the reference device for underwater PAR measurements in reef aquariums. It measures photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) in the 400 to 700 nm range with an accuracy of ± 5%. The meter offers a sample mode (up to 99 manual measurements) and an automatic log mode (one measurement every 30 seconds, averaged every 30 minutes).

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included in the PAR meter rental?

The rental includes the Apogee MQ-210 handheld meter and the AM-320 underwater sensor wand calibrated for saltwater with its 2-meter waterproof cable. Everything you need to measure PAR in your reef aquarium is provided.

How does the PAR meter rental work?

You pay a deposit of $549.95 when ordering. You receive the Apogee MQ-210 meter with the AM-320 wand by mail (free delivery). You have 5 days to measure PAR in your aquarium and adjust your lighting. You return the device at your own expense. Your deposit is refunded minus the $69.99 rental fee.

Why measure PAR in my reef aquarium?

PAR is the most reliable measure to know if your corals are receiving enough light. Unlike lumens or lux, PAR specifically measures photons useful for photosynthesis. Each aquarium is different — water height, salinity, light fixture distance, and obstructions create significant variations. A PAR reading allows you to precisely adjust the power and position of your lighting.

Can I rent the PAR meter for more than 5 days?

Yes. Each additional 5-day period costs $69.99, deducted from your initial deposit. The remaining deposit is refunded when the device is returned in good condition.
