Aqua UV Advantage 2000 Barb x Barb 8 Watt UV Sterilizer — 3/4" Inline UV for Aquariums up to 70 Gallons

The Aqua Ultraviolet Advantage 2000 Barb x Barb 8 Watt UV Sterilizer is a compact model with 3/4" barb fittings designed for inline installation in small marine aquariums, freshwater ponds, and quarantine tanks. Unlike the Hanger model which hangs on the aquarium rim, the Barb x Barb is plumbed directly inline with a 3/4" flexible hose, offering a more discreet and permanent installation in the sump or under the cabinet.

The 8-watt germicidal UV lamp emits radiation at 254 nm which destroys the DNA and RNA of single-celled organisms, preventing their reproduction. The streamlined housing of the Advantage series maximizes contact time for a 99.9% kill rate. Flow rates are calculated at 30,000 µw/cm² at the end of the lamp's life (14 months), so no flow adjustment is needed throughout the lamp's lifespan. The transparent blue cap allows visual verification that the lamp is on without exposure to UVC rays.

Use in Reef Aquariums

For a reef aquarium with corals and live rock, use this sterilizer at a flow rate corresponding to 30,000 or 45,000 µw/cm² to preserve planktonic food necessary for corals. The Advantage 2000 8W is ideal for nano reefs up to 70 gallons and quarantine tanks.

Barb x Barb vs Hanger — Which model to choose?

Both Advantage 2000 8W models share the same lamp and treatment capabilities. The difference is the type of fitting. The Barb x Barb model uses 3/4" barb fittings on both sides for permanent inline installation with flexible tubing. The Hanger model uses an output hook that hangs on the aquarium rim, ideal for quick installation without plumbing. The Barb x Barb is preferable for sump installations where flexible tubing can be routed directly to the main tank.

Installation

Install the inline sterilizer after the filter or skimmer for optimal efficiency. Connect a 3/4" flexible hose to each barbed end. The unit is not submersible and is suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Aqua Ultraviolet recommends changing the lamp after 14 months of continuous use and cleaning the quartz sleeve regularly. In saltwater, clean the quartz sleeve more frequently to prevent salt buildup.

Warranty

Limited lifetime warranty on the housing, 1 year on the complete unit, and 12 months pro-rata on the lamp (quartz sleeve is excluded from warranty).

Included in the Box

Housing with 3/4" barbed fittings, transformer, 8W UV lamp, and quartz sleeve — ready to install.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Advantage 2000 Barb x Barb and the Hanger model?

Both models use the same 8W lamp and offer the same treatment capabilities (70 gallons in saltwater). The Barb x Barb is plumbed inline with 3/4" flexible tubing for permanent installation. The Hanger hangs on the aquarium rim for quick installation without plumbing. Choose the Barb x Barb for discreet sump installation.

Is the Advantage 2000 8W Barb x Barb UV sterilizer suitable for a reef aquarium?

Yes, the Advantage 2000 8W is ideal for reef aquariums up to 70 gallons. Use a flow rate corresponding to 30,000 or 45,000 µw/cm² to preserve the plankton necessary for corals.

How often should I change the UV lamp in the Advantage 2000 8W?

Aqua Ultraviolet recommends replacing the lamp after 14 months of continuous use. This is the longest lamp life in the industry. The published flow rates are calculated at the end of the lamp's life, so no adjustment is required during this period.
