Orbit 4 — Gyre 45W Cross-Flow Pump 20mm Glass Bluetooth - AquaIllumination

The AI Orbit 4 is the high-power version of the Orbit line. Same idea as the Orbit 2 — it spins the whole water mass instead of firing a jet — but with 45W and a 12.1in. profile. AquaIllumination recommends it for tanks from 50 to 120+ gallons, with glass up to 20mm.

The 20mm Glass Rating Is Where It Counts

This is the real difference between the two Orbits, and it matters far more than the wattage. The Orbit 2 stops at 15mm: that's its magnet's limit. Move to a thick-glass tank and it simply won't hold.

The Orbit 4 goes to 0.79in. (20mm). That's what makes it usable on the big thick-glass tanks the Orbit 2 can't touch.

Check your exact tank model. At Red Sea for instance, the REEFER G3 line uses glass up to 0.75in. (19mm) depending on the model — within the Orbit 4's limit, but thickness varies by size. Measure, or send us your model and we'll check it with you.

Cross-Flow vs Directional Flow

A Nero pushes water in a straight line: powerful, precise, you aim it where you want. An Orbit sets the water mass spinning. AquaIllumination describes this cross-flow current as simulating the tidal flow experienced on ocean reefs, and an excellent mechanism for lifting excess nutrients from the bottom of the aquarium for removal by filtration.

On a large tank, that's the difference between clean sand and a bottom that packs detritus into the corners.

The 4 Modes

  • Constant Speed: a constant stream of flow at the intensity of your choosing
  • Pulse: uniform high and low levels
  • Random: simulates a high-energy reef environment
  • Reverse: reverse the flow

Reverse Mode — and the Two-Pump Trick

AquaIllumination devotes a whole section to it. According to the manufacturer, reverse operation does three things:

  • Augments your custom flow patterns and programs
  • Creates turbulent flow, which helps remove detritus
  • Lets multiple pumps run in opposite directions to augment gyre or circular flow

That last point aims squarely at tanks the Orbit 4's size. Two Orbit 4s at either end of a 120-gallon, spinning against each other, create a whole-tank rotation one pump can't reproduce no matter how strong it is.

Ecosystem of Flow — Orbit + Nero

AquaIllumination is explicit: it's not one type of flow that makes a reef thrive. The manufacturer writes that combining the Orbit with the directional and random flow patterns of the Nero line achieves a true recreation of ocean flow — powerful, directional, systematic, and chaotic.

On a tank the Orbit 4's size, the classic combination is one Orbit 4 for whole-tank rotation and a Nero 7 to hit the SPS zones. Both in the same app.

Control

  • Mobius: free iOS and Android app
  • myAI: also compatible
  • Neptune Apex: through Apex Fusion with the MXM module

The driver is integrated into the pump.

Technical Specifications

  • Maximum glass thickness: 0.79in. (20mm)
  • Recommended tank size: 50 to 120+ gallons
  • Power consumption: variable, 45W max
  • Input: 100–240VAC, 50-60Hz, 2A
  • Width: 12.1in. (307.3mm)
  • Height: 3.15in. (80mm)
  • Depth: 1.69in. (42.9mm)

Note the depth: 1.69in. Despite its width, the Orbit 4 barely intrudes into the tank.

AquaIllumination doesn't publish a GPH flow rate for the Orbit pumps. We're not going to invent one: send us your tank dimensions and we'll tell you straight what makes sense.

What's in the Box

  • 1 x AI Orbit 4 Pump with Integrated Driver
  • 1 x Mounting Magnet
  • 1 x Power Adapter with Universal Plug Adapter Set
  • 1 x Quick Start Guide

Complementary products:

  • AI Orbit 2 — the little sister: 25W, glass up to 15mm, tanks from 20 to 88+ gallons
  • AI Nero 7 — the directional to pair with on a big tank: this is the combination AquaIllumination recommends
  • AI Nero 5 — the mid-range directional, same Mobius app
  • AI Nero 3 — the compact one, to fill in flow in a specific zone

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Orbit 2 and the Orbit 4?

Three things. Orbit 2: 25W, glass up to 15mm, tanks 20 to 88+ gallons, 8.78in. wide. Orbit 4: 45W, glass up to 20mm, tanks 50 to 120+ gallons, 12.1in. wide. Glass thickness is often the deciding factor: if your tank is over 15mm, the Orbit 2 won't hold, whatever the volume.

Is the Orbit 4 compatible with Red Sea Reefer aquariums?

The Orbit 4 handles glass up to 0.79in. (20mm). At Red Sea, the REEFER G3 line uses glass up to 0.75in. (19mm) depending on the model — so within the Orbit 4's limit. But thickness varies by size: check your exact model, or write us and we'll do it with you. The Orbit 4 is also MXM compatible for control through Neptune Apex.

Is the Orbit 4 right for a 40-gallon tank?

AquaIllumination recommends the Orbit 4 for tanks from 50 to 120+ gallons. Below that, the Orbit 2 (20 to 88+ gallons) is the right call. A 45W pump in too small a tank, even at minimum, lifts the sand and stresses corals instead of feeding them.

Should you pair the Orbit 4 with a Nero pump?

AquaIllumination recommends it. The manufacturer writes that combining the Orbit's cross-flow with the directional and random patterns of the Nero line achieves a true recreation of ocean flow — powerful, directional, systematic, and chaotic. The Orbit spins the water mass, the Nero hits the specific spots.
