Technical background
Brightwell Aquatics Garlic Power is composed solely of preserved raw garlic extract. Garlic has long been recognized for its medicinal properties, and clinical research is beginning to support some of the claims made by its proponents. It was once thought that the active ingredient in garlic was a compound called allicin, formed by the combination of the amino acid alliin and the enzyme alliinase, which is produced when garlic is damaged (cut, processed, bitten, etc.). Research has shown that allicin is unstable and has a very short shelf life, beginning to degrade immediately after its formation (a process accelerated by exposure to heat; conversely, refrigeration extends the shelf life of allicin, but probably not enough to guarantee its presence in a garlic extract). This degradation produces several compounds called diallyl sulfides. These compounds also exhibit beneficial properties and, although less effective than allicin, their use in medical treatments and the exact nature of the benefits they provide are the subject of ongoing research.
In aquariums, the use of garlic is often associated with improved fish health, particularly in tanks with parasite problems. As noted in the box opposite, this product is not intended for use as a medicine. Garlic has also been shown to entice newly introduced and/or picky fish to feed; this is achieved by soaking food in a small amount of garlic extract for several minutes and then feeding, and the results are often very satisfactory. Note that while garlic can improve food palatability, this approach should not be considered as a way to avoid purchasing fish species that have poor survival in captivity due to their dietary requirements (e.g., various species of coralivorous butterflyfish, spongivorous angelfish, etc.). Always research the dietary and environmental needs of fish before purchasing and introducing them into an aquarium.
Instructions and recommendations
To fortify prepared foods (recommended): Shake the product well before use. Place the food in a clean container, such as a small bowl or cup, and add just enough Garlic Power to saturate. Let stand for at least 5 minutes before feeding to allow the product to be completely absorbed into the food. Liquid food suspensions can be fortified by adding 1.0 ml (approximately 8 drops) of Garlic Power per 10 ml of food suspension; stir to mix and let stand for 5 minutes before feeding. The benefits of a liquid food suspension are greatest when it is administered to the target organisms rather than poured into a stream of water and randomly dispersed throughout the aquarium. Over a period of several months, the dosage may be increased by 50% if necessary, provided that water quality is monitored and maintained within the required limits. Carefully monitor water quality at all times and adjust the dosage as necessary.
If adding directly to the aquarium: Shake the product well before use. Add 5 ml (1 capful) of product per 190 liters of aquarium water every other day, or add half this dose daily. Thus, 125 ml will treat up to 4,732 liters (1,250 US gallons). Carefully monitor water quality at all times and adjust the dose if necessary.
No medicinal claims are made regarding Garlic Power; however, fish showing signs of ectoparasites may benefit from the addition of garlic to their diet. If ectoparasites are present, Garlic Power can be added to the food as directed and dosed directly into the aquarium at half the recommended dose. It is generally recommended to use Garlic Power either to enrich prepared foods or to provide benefits by direct addition to the water, but not both, unless otherwise stated.
Improve the nutritional profile of any food: It's always a good idea to add vitamins, minerals, and amino acids to your food. You can also add garlic or other healthy nutritious ingredients. Brightwell offers the following foods, which are excellent additives and can be added directly to the aquarium: CoralAminō, Restōr, AminŌmega, Vitamarin-M, Vītamarin-C, Garlic Power, MaxAmino, and Angelixer.
Caution: Keep out of reach of children. Do not consume.
