🧠 Biological importance of iodine in reef aquariums

Iodine is an essential trace element in natural seawater (~0.06 ppm all forms combined).

It is vital for:

• Hermatypic corals (SPS, LPS)
• Giant clams (Tridacna)
• Invertebrates hosting zooxanthellae
• Pisces
• Crustaceans
• Macroalgae

Key role in coral metabolism

Zooxanthellae produce oxygen during photosynthesis. An excess of oxygen can irritate sensitive tissues.

Iodine (in the form of iodide) binds to oxygen to form non-toxic iodate, reducing oxidative stress and allowing corals to:

🧪 DOSAGE IN AQUARIUMS (official calculation)

⚠️ Lugol's exists in two different concentrations according to regulations.
Check the concentration indicated on your label.

Each ml increases iodine by 1 US gallon according to the value indicated on the label (often 12 ppm/gallon).

Calculation formula

Gallons in the tank × desired increase (ppm) × 0.07570 = ml to add

Example

To increase a 100-gallon aquarium by 0.02 ppm:

100 × 0.02 × 0.07570 = 0.15 ml
0.15 ml × 20 = 3 drops

(1 ml = 20 drops)

🪨 USE AS A CORAL DIP

⚠️ Check the concentration indicated on the bottle.

Official Dip Formula:

14.4 ÷ ppm per gallon indicated on the label = ml to add to 1 gallon of tank water

Example if the label indicates 12 ppm:

14.4 ÷ 12 = 1.2 ml

SO :

• 1 ml (1 dropper)
• + 0.2 ml (≈ 4 drops)

Corals to be immersed for a maximum of 10 to 12 minutes
