Ultra-activated ceramic media for advanced denitrification

Brightwell Xport NO3 Brick is an ultra-porous ceramic biological media specially designed for the intensive reduction of nitrates (NO3) in marine and hard freshwater aquariums (pH ≥ 7.5).

This brick is doped with elemental sulfur , which acts as an electron donor to accelerate denitrification, particularly effective in systems with a high organic load or chronically high nitrate levels.

🔬 How it works

Sulfur doping stimulates the process of converting nitrates into nitrogen gas, while integrated aragonite buffers the pH at the bacterial level to avoid internal acidification that reduces the effectiveness of competing media.

Its extremely porous structure allows it to remain moist for several days after drainage, which helps to preserve bacterial viability during equipment failure.

🧪 Recommended dosage

  • 1 brick per 1,000 US gallons (3,800 L) of system capacity
  • Do not exceed one brick per 100 gallons under normal use
  • The bricks can be cut for smaller systems

⚙️ Optimal installation

For maximum denitrification

Place the brick underwater in a very low flow area to limit oxygen and promote the internal anaerobic environment.

For combined nitrification and denitrification action

Install underwater with a moderate flow rate:
• External surface → nitrification
• Interior → denitrification

🦠 Seeding

Rinse before use.

For optimal sowing:

  1. Soak the brick overnight in a container filled with aquarium water containing the bacterial strain used in the system.
  2. Next, install it in the system

Avoid mixing different bacterial strains during startup.

🔄 Recommendations

  • Use mechanical filtration upstream to prevent clogging
  • Maintain good gas exchange in the system
  • The biological medium does not provide oxygenation.
