Pseudochromis porphyreus (Strawberry Pseudochromis)

This brightly colored magenta fish is a spectacular addition to a saltwater aquarium. Highly hardy, it requires little maintenance, but its territorial nature necessitates careful attention to its tank mates.

Key features
  • Difficulty level: Beginner (but temperament needs monitoring).
  • Adult size: Up to 7.5 cm.
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive, territorial.
  • Minimum volume: 120 liters (30 gallons).

Aquarium conditions
  • Temperature: 24-28 °C.
  • Density (salinity): 1.020–1.026.
  • pH: 8.0–8.4.
  • Setting: It needs a setting with plenty of live rock to hide in and establish its territory. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as it is an exceptional jumper.

Food
  • Type: Carnivore.
  • Diet: Accepts flake and pelleted foods, but a varied diet is recommended. Offer vitamin-enriched frozen foods, such as mysis shrimp and brine shrimp, to maintain vibrant colors.
  • Frequency: 2 to 3 small portions per day.

Compatibility and behavior
  • In reef aquariums: Generally considered safe for reefs, it does not affect corals.
  • Compatibility: It may be harassed by larger and more aggressive fish. Avoid small, timid fish or those of a similar shape (such as royal Gramma).
  • With invertebrates: Exercise caution with small shrimp and benthic invertebrates, as it may consider them food.
  • Installation: This is one of the last fish to be introduced into the aquarium to minimize territorial aggression.
