Pseudochromis porphyreus (Strawberry Pseudochromis)
This brightly colored magenta fish is a spectacular addition to a saltwater aquarium. Highly hardy, it requires little maintenance, but its territorial nature necessitates careful attention to its tank mates.
Key features
- Difficulty level: Beginner (but temperament needs monitoring).
- Adult size: Up to 7.5 cm.
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive, territorial.
- Minimum volume: 120 liters (30 gallons).
Aquarium conditions
- Temperature: 24-28 °C.
- Density (salinity): 1.020–1.026.
- pH: 8.0–8.4.
- Setting: It needs a setting with plenty of live rock to hide in and establish its territory. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as it is an exceptional jumper.
Food
- Type: Carnivore.
- Diet: Accepts flake and pelleted foods, but a varied diet is recommended. Offer vitamin-enriched frozen foods, such as mysis shrimp and brine shrimp, to maintain vibrant colors.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 small portions per day.
Compatibility and behavior
- In reef aquariums: Generally considered safe for reefs, it does not affect corals.
- Compatibility: It may be harassed by larger and more aggressive fish. Avoid small, timid fish or those of a similar shape (such as royal Gramma).
- With invertebrates: Exercise caution with small shrimp and benthic invertebrates, as it may consider them food.
- Installation: This is one of the last fish to be introduced into the aquarium to minimize territorial aggression.
