DVH Aquatic All-in-One Advanced BioPellets are a biological filter media that lowers nitrate and phosphate in reef aquariums. Run in a fluidized reactor, the pellets act as both a carbon source and a colonization surface for the bacteria that consume excess nutrients — which DVH calls the key to top coral coloration, healthy fish and avoiding algae outbreaks. Made in Holland.

How the pellets work

The pellets have a unique microporous structure combined with a secondary facilitator that binds acids and nutrition. This external and internal support lets nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria work 5-10 times more efficiently than on regular biopellets, according to DVH. Bacteria draw carbon from the pellets while taking nitrogen and phosphorus straight from the water as nitrate and (ortho)phosphate. Nitrate-loaded bacteria are then exported by the protein skimmer or consumed by tank inhabitants such as corals and crustaceans.

Official DVH Aquatic dosage

  • Place 35-150 ml of pellets per 100 L / 25 US gal of water in a fluidized reactor.
  • Allow 2-6 weeks, depending on your system, for the bacteria population to multiply and begin consuming nitrates.
  • If nitrates are above 20 ppm, introduce the pellets gradually.
  • Add extra pellets when the volume in the reactor decreases over time.
  • Recommended NO3:PO4 ratio = 1 : 0,01.

Pellets are digested by bacteria, so plan a top-up every 6-12 months. DVH suggests placing the reactor outlet in front of the protein skimmer to limit bacteria entering the system and to improve gas exchange. Never run biopellets without sufficient aeration — oxygen and pH can drop, especially at night.

Three sizes: 250 ml, 500 ml and 1000 ml

  • 250 ml — starter size for small water volumes.
  • 500 ml — the mid-size format.
  • 1000 ml — the everyday format: at 35-150 ml per 100 L, this is the size that fills a reactor on a full-size tank and covers 6-12 month top-ups.

Our advice

NoPox versus biopellets? Look, it's a different concept. Biopellets take more equipment: you need a reactor, you need this and that. The liquid — NoPox — you simply add every day at your dosage. It's a matter of preference. You have more control with NoPox, while with biopellets, well, you set them up and you have no control over what's happening. So it's easier to overshoot and end up with phosphate and nitrate that bottom out at zero — and that's really not good.
