Lima sp. (Electric Flame Scallop)

The Electric Flame Scallop ( Lima sp.) is a spectacular variant of the Flame Scallop, remarkable for the bioluminescent or "electric" effect that runs along its red tentacles—a luminous flash that rhythmically propagates along the tentacular filaments. This phenomenon, still poorly understood scientifically, is one of the most striking displays in marine aquariums. Each observation appears different depending on the angle and lighting.

Difficult species: Like all Limas, the Electric Flame Scallop is difficult to keep long-term. Its specific diet and phytoplankton requirements must be carefully planned.

Requirements

• Lighting: low to moderate — shaded areas preferred
• Water flow: moderate with gentle turbulence
• Temperature: 24–27°C
• Salinity: 1.024–1.026
• pH: 7.8–8.4 (normal natural day/night fluctuation in a reef tank)

Food

Strict filter feeder — phytoplankton liquid 2–3 times a week minimum. Rezoides (active refugium) and microalgae suspended in the tank significantly improve its lifespan.
