Calcinus elegans , called the blue electric hermit crab, is one of the most sought-after hermit crabs in marine aquariums thanks to its spectacular colors.

It is characterized by:

  • Intense electric blue legs

  • Darker contrasting bands

  • Bright orange antennas

  • High resistance in reef aquariums

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly tropical coral reefs, it naturally lives in abandoned gastropod shells which it changes as it grows.

Role in the reef aquarium

The blue electric hermit crab is an excellent maintenance assistant:

✔ Consumes filamentous algae
✔ Cleans up food scraps
✔ Contributes to biological balance
✔ Contributes to the light aeration of the substrate

It is particularly recommended in mixed reef tanks and well-stabilized nano-reefs.

Maintenance and upkeep

Minimum volume: 100 liters recommended
Temperature: 24–26 °C
pH: 8.0–8.4
Density: 1.023–1.025
KH: 7–12 dKH

Food

Omnivorous and detritivorous species:

  • Natural algae from the tank

  • Marine invertebrate pellets

  • Occasional meat-based food (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp)

A dietary supplement may be useful in very clean tanks.

Key point: the shells

To avoid any aggression:

  • Provide several suitable empty shells

  • Offer different sizes

  • Monitor competition with snails

A lack of shells can lead to opportunistic attacks.

Compatibility

✔ Compatible with peaceful reef fish
✔ Safe for corals
⚠ May prey on snails if shells are scarce
❌ Avoid with fish that prey on crustaceans

Expert advice

  • Do not introduce into an immature tank

  • Monitor molting periods
