Zoanthidae , commonly known as zoanthids , are soft corals that are very popular in reef aquariums thanks to their vibrant colors and ease of care. Available in a wide range of hues and patterns, they form colonies that quickly cover rocks and other surfaces, creating a spectacular visual effect. Zoanthids are ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists because of their hardiness and ability to adapt to different conditions.

Maintenance guide:

1. Aquarium size and configuration:

• Minimum volume: 50 liters to guarantee the stability of the parameters.

• Lighting: Low to moderate (recommended PAR: 50–150 PAR). Zoanthids adapt well to a variety of light intensities, but LED or T5 lights bring out their vibrant colors.

• Placement:

• Lower to middle zones of the aquarium, depending on the intensity of the light.

• Allow free space around them to allow for propagation.

2. Water parameters:

• Temperature: 24–26°C.

• Salinity: 1.024–1.026 (specific gravity).

• pH: 7.8–8.4.

• Calcium: 400–450 ppm.

• Alkalinity (KH): 8–12 dKH.

• Magnesium: 1250–1450 ppm.

• Nitrates: Less than 10 ppm (ideally 2–5 ppm).

• Phosphates: Less than 0.05 ppm.

3. Fluent :

• Moderate. A gentle to moderate flow promotes the growth of polyps without stressing them.

4. Food :

• Zoanthids are primarily photosynthetic thanks to their zooxanthellae, but supplemental nutrition stimulates their growth and intensifies their colors:

• Marine plankton, phytoplankton or specific liquid foods for soft corals.

• Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week.

5. Compatibility and cohabitation:

• Reef compatible: Yes, Zoanthids are peaceful and adapt well to other corals.

• Ideal companions: Peaceful fish such as gobies, clownfish and non-aggressive invertebrates.

• To avoid: Certain butterflyfish or invertebrates, such as crabs, which may nibble on their polyps.

6. Maintenance and growth:

• Rapid growth under optimal conditions. Take care to prevent excessive spread by limiting available space if necessary.

• Gently clean the areas around the colonies to prevent algae buildup.

7. Signs of good health:

• Polyps open and well-extended, with bright and vibrant colors.

• No bleached fabrics or shrunken areas.

8. Special precautions:

• Zoanthids can contain toxins called palitoxins , which are potentially dangerous to humans through direct contact or inhalation. Wear gloves when handling them.

• Maintain stable water parameters and avoid sudden changes.
