The Red Sea ReefRun G2 is the second generation of Red Sea's DC return pumps, available in 4 models from 4,000 to 12,000 L/h (1,060 to 3,200 gph) to cover every reef aquarium from nano to large REEFER systems. Its sine-wave DC motor ensures, in the manufacturer's words, virtually silent operation from the very start, even at 100% intensity — and unlike the first generation, it runs standalone thanks to its built-in Flow Controller, with nothing else to buy.

The included Flow Controller switches the pump on and off and adjusts intensity in 20% steps, no internet connection required. To go further, connect it to the ReefRun Dual Controller (sold separately): the pump then joins the ReefBeat ecosystem with a daily schedule of varying intensities, a pulse mode for closed-loop wave installations, customized Feed, Maintenance and Emergency Quick Actions, two pumps linked and operated as a single unit, and notifications if the pump is running dry, blocked or disconnected. One Dual Controller can even run a ReefRun G2 pump and a REEFER DC Skimmer together.

More flow for less energy than generation 1

Red Sea measured both generations at a real-world return height of 125 cm (4 ft): the ReefRun G2 8000 delivers 5,800 L/h while using 600 kWh/year, where the old ReefRun 9000 delivered 5,700 L/h for 820 kWh/year. Every G2 model pushes more water than its G1 counterpart while using less power.

Built for maintenance

• 180° rotatable outlet for a flexible setup in the sump
• Two latches give direct access to the impeller — no tools needed
• Rotatable inlet guide prevents air intake from the water surface
• 3-meter (10 ft) power cable with a connector just 1 meter from the pump: disconnect without pulling the power supply
• Built-in protection: automatic shutdown if the pump runs dry or the impeller stalls

Manufacturer's maintenance: rinse the impeller assembly and pump body, use a soft brush for deposits, soak in diluted vinegar if needed (remove rubber parts first). The impeller shaft has a very strong magnet — hold it firmly and protect the ceramic bearing at the bottom of the chamber.

Go by your real return height and target flow on the manufacturer's pump curve rather than the max rating. Since speed is adjustable, pick the model that hits your target at mid speed: it runs easier and quieter, with headroom to spare. At 125 cm (4 ft) of head, the G2 4000 delivers 2,650 L/h, the 6000 4,550 L/h, the 8000 5,800 L/h and the 12000 7,150 L/h (official Red Sea measurements).

What's the difference between the ReefRun G2 and the old ReefRun 9000?
