Trochus snail

Trochus snails ( Trochus histrio and spp.) are among the most effective and highly recommended algae cleaners for reef aquariums. Their characteristic wide-based, conical shell and powerful foot allow them to vigorously scrape algae from all surfaces. Unlike Turbo snails, Trochus have the remarkable ability to right themselves if they fall on their backs—a significant practical advantage.

His role in the baccalaureate

Excellent consumers of filamentous green algae, encrusting algae, diatoms, and cyanobacteria on glass, rocks, and decorations. Their vigorous scraping helps maintain clean and healthy surfaces for the growth of desired coralline algae.

Recommended conditions

• Temperature: 23–27°C
• Salinity: 1.023–1.026
• pH: 7.8–8.4 (normal natural day/night fluctuation in a reef tank)
• Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH — Calcium: 380–430 ppm

Behavior

Active day and night. They right themselves if overturned—a major advantage over Turbo shrimp. Peaceful. Can breed in aquariums under good conditions.

Recommended dosage

1 per 8–10L for active algal control.
