Aquaforest AF Air Scrubber — reef pH stabilizer 8.0-8.4 CO₂ absorber

The AF Air Scrubber is Aquaforest's pH stabilizer, engineered to capture ambient CO₂ before it enters the tank via the skimmer. In a reef tank placed in a closed living space (living room, office, basement), room CO₂ concentration can exceed 800-1,500 ppm — double or triple outdoor levels — mechanically dropping tank pH toward 7.8 or lower. The AF Air Scrubber intervenes at the source by cleaning the air pulled in by the skimmer.

Measurable result: the manufacturer states a typical pH lift of +0.2 to +0.4 units and stabilization in the 8.0-8.4 range, ideal for SPS biomineralization and coral tissue health. First effects appear within a few days of operation.

How the AF Air Scrubber works

  • Skimmer connection — 10 mm fitting on top of the reactor connects the skimmer to the purified air intake.
  • Moist sponges — three sponges at the base soaked in RO/DI water humidify the pulled air and improve CO₂ absorption.
  • Absorber media — AF Air Scrubber Media cartridge loaded into the reactor body.
  • Clean air — CO₂ is captured before entering the skimmer, the air injected into the tank no longer carries excess atmospheric CO₂.

Setup and parameters

  • Placement: near the skimmer, in the sump or fish room.
  • 10 mm silicone fitting — the AF Air Scrubber Hose is sold separately.
  • RO/DI base sponges — moisten before first use then check periodically.
  • Media cartridge — replace about every 2-3 months depending on consumption.
  • pH monitoring — install a pH controller to validate the effect and anticipate media replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What pH gain can I expect with the AF Air Scrubber?

Aquaforest reports a typical +0.2 to +0.4 unit pH lift and stabilization in the 8.0-8.4 range. Exact gain depends on the room's initial CO₂ concentration, the skimmer's air draw, and how fresh the absorber media is. In a heavily occupied office or living room, the effect can be higher.

Does the AF Air Scrubber replace an outdoor air line?

An outdoor-drawing air line remains the most effective (and free) solution if a window is near the tank. The AF Air Scrubber becomes relevant when no outdoor line is possible (basement, poorly ventilated apartment) or when the outdoor air itself is CO₂-heavy (busy street, winter with closed windows).

How often should I replace the absorber media?

Aquaforest doesn't set a strict schedule — duration depends on ambient CO₂ and skimmer draw. A pH controller helps anticipate replacement: as soon as stabilization drops and pH starts falling, the media is saturated. In practice, 2-3 months is a common ballpark.
