Aquaforest Component A 2,000 ml — calcium and trace elements for the Balling reef method

The Component A 2,000 ml is the calcium pillar of Aquaforest's Balling trio. Liquid ready-to-dose, it delivers calcium paired with trace elements strontium, barium, cobalt, manganese, copper, iron, zinc, nickel, and chromium — the metals essential to hard coral calcium skeletons and their accessory pigments. Used alongside Component B (alkalinity) and Component C (magnesium), it holds reef macros stable between water changes.

The 2 L bottle covers several months of use on a mid-sized reef. Middle-ground format between the 5 L Components 1+2+3+ and the compact 3in1 alternatives, aimed at hobbyists who prefer the full Balling protocol but stop short of 5 L jugs.

Component A's role in the Balling trio

  • Primary calcium supply — offsets Ca precipitation in coral skeletons.
  • Metal trace elements — Sr, Ba, Co, Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn, Ni, Cr for pigmentation.
  • Strictly equal dose to B and C — the trio dose in identical shares to preserve ionic balance.
  • Classic Balling method compatible — H. W. Balling protocol adapted by Aquaforest.

Aquaforest official dosing

  • Starting dose (average SPS stock): 25 ml of Component A per 100 L (26 US gal) of tank water per day.
  • Measurable effect: 25 ml of Component A in 100 L raises calcium by about 4.5 ppm.
  • Balance: exact same dose for Component B and Component C — strict 1:1:1 ratio.
  • Spread: distribute the dose over 24 h via dosing pump, never in one shot.
  • Tuning: in 10-20 % steps based on weekly Ca tests.

Parameter targets

  • Calcium: 380-460 ppm (aim 420-440).
  • Alkalinity: 7-9 dKH (SPS) to 8-11 dKH (LPS).
  • Magnesium: 1,180-1,460 ppm (aim 1,300-1,400).

Frequently asked questions

Does Component A always have to be dosed together with B and C?

Yes — the trio is dosed in strictly equal shares and never one component alone. Dosing Component A without B and C makes alkalinity and magnesium drift down over time, destabilizing the tank. If one bottle runs out temporarily, reduce the whole trio proportionally rather than unbalance it.

How long does a 2 L Component A bottle last?

At 25 ml per 100 L per day, a 100 L (26 US gal) tank draws 25 ml daily and a 2 L bottle lasts 80 days (about 2.6 months). On a 200 L tank, duration drops to 40 days.

Can I use Component A with manual dosing rather than a dosing pump?

Yes — once-a-day manual dosing at a set time works. The dosing pump simply spreads the dose over 24 h to limit swings. On a stable tank, the gap between the two methods stays marginal if the daily total is respected.
