The Component C 2,000 ml is the magnesium pillar of Aquaforest's Balling trio. Liquid ready-to-dose solution combining magnesium, Reef Mineral Salt, potassium, and boron — the trace elements that pair with calcium and alkalinity in coral skeletons and tissues. Its presence in the trio stabilizes the Ca/Mg ratio critical to blocking spontaneous calcium carbonate precipitation.

The 2 L bottle suits 50-200 L reef tanks with moderate consumption. Strictly identical formula to Component 3+ in the 5 L Components 1+2+3+ kits — only the packaging changes.

Component C's role in Balling

Why does magnesium drop more slowly than calcium?

Magnesium contributes to coral structure but in a lower-consumption proportion than calcium. A mature SPS tank may draw only 5-10 ppm of Mg per week versus 15-30 ppm of Ca. That's why the Balling trio adds 4.5 ppm of Ca for only 0.38 ppm of Mg per dose — a ratio aligned with real consumption.

What happens if magnesium drops below 1,150 ppm?

Below 1,150 ppm, abiotic calcium carbonate precipitation accelerates — alkalinity drops abnormally, calcium reactors scale up, and KH turns unstable. Aquaforest recommends never letting Mg fall below 1,180 ppm and aiming for 1,300-1,400.

Can Component C replace a separate Reef Mineral Salt dose?

Yes — Component C already carries Reef Mineral Salt in its formula. Extra dosing only makes sense on ultra-mature SPS tanks where ICP shows a specific deficit in one trace element.
