Too little phosphate is as dangerous as too much — coral zooxanthellae need a minimum PO4 input to synthesize pigments and supply nutritive sugars to their coral host. On a ULNS tank extremely low in PO4, corals lose colors, slow growth, and can even bleach. A calibrated add-in restores coral health.

How do I know if my tank needs PO4+?

Three converging signals: PO4 reading 0 (under 0.01 ppm) on several successive weekly tests, SPS corals paling or losing vivid colors, and a tank with few fish or very active filtration. Without all three signals, don't dose — 0.03 ppm PO4 with colorful corals shows a natural balance to preserve.

Can I dose Lab PO4+ without checking NO3 in parallel?

Not recommended — the NP 16:1 Redfield ratio matters for zooxanthellae nutrition. Dosing PO4+ without watching NO3 can create a nutritional imbalance that triggers unwanted algae blooms. Test NO3 before each PO4+ dose adjustment.
