Frequently asked questions

Why is Mg testing less frequent than Ca or KH?

Magnesium is consumed much more slowly than calcium or alkalinity in a reef tank. On a stable tank, a meaningful Mg swing takes several weeks. A monthly reading is enough to catch drift. On a tank just starting dosing or after a salt change, twice-weekly tests remain useful to dial in the dose.

Does low Mg explain unstable KH?

Often yes — when magnesium drops below 1,150-1,180 ppm, abiotic calcium carbonate precipitation accelerates. Result: the measured KH consumption exceeds real biological consumption, and KH dosing can't keep up. The rule: always check Mg before raising KH doses.

Can I use the test on freshwater?
