The Nitrate Test Pro measures nitrate (NO3⁻) concentration in marine and reef water by colorimetry. Useful range 0-50 mg/L (ppm), resolution enough to tell key reef steps apart — 1, 5, 10, 25 ppm. Kit ships with two reagents (A-NO3 and B-NO3), test vial, two dosing syringes (2 ml and 1 ml), measuring spoon, instructions and color chart.

Using the Nitrate Test Pro

• Frequency: weekly on a reef tank, two to three times a week on NP Pro probiotic regime.
• Procedure: add reagent A to the sample, shake, incorporate powder reagent B, wait for the development time then compare to the color chart.
• Caution: color can drift after a few minutes — follow the timing in the instructions.

What's the ideal NO3 for an SPS tank?

Aquaforest and the reef community agree on 0.5-2 ppm for high-growth SPS. Below 0.5 ppm, nutritional bleaching risk shows up. Above 5 ppm, coloration darkens and growth slows. The 1-2 ppm zone stays the sweet spot for most SPS tanks.

How do I read a 0 ppm result?

The kit shows "0" for anything below ~0.1 ppm. If the tank hosts SPS and always reads zero, it's a signal: the carbon source (vodka, biopellets) is over-dosed or the consuming biomass too high. Add nitrate via NeoNitro dosing (Brightwell) or cut back the carbon source.

Is the kit fresh-water compatible?

Reading is possible but less reliable — the test is optimized for the marine matrix. For freshwater, dedicated kits (Salifert, Red Sea, JBL) calibrate better to planted or aquascaping tank concentrations.
